On Wednesday, February 4, 2026, the South Korean Hanwha Group announced its participation in World Defense Show 2026 (WDS) in Riyadh, scheduled for February 8–12 this year. During the event, the company will present a comprehensive portfolio of multi-domain defense solutions designed to address the evolving security landscape of the Middle East. The Group is focused on expanding its strategic presence in Saudi Arabia through deep localization and industrial cooperation, positioning itself as a key partner in the implementation of the Saudi Vision 2030 strategy while demonstrating its readiness to support a self-sufficient defense ecosystem and the goals of the Saudization policy.
Hanwha’s engagement in Saudi Arabia goes beyond supplying military equipment to include the creation of a self-sufficient defense ecosystem. By prioritizing local manufacturing, strategic technology transfer, and the development of local defense talent, Hanwha aims to directly support the Kingdom’s industrial diversification objectives and its “Saudization” policy. This long-term commitment will ensure that the Kingdom can achieve defense self-sufficiency while maintaining the highest level of combat readiness through a robust domestic supply chain.
At the center of Hanwha’s exhibition will be a full-scale 155 mm K9A1 Thunder self-propelled howitzer, now powered by a South Korean-made engine, the 1,000 hp STX Engine SMV 1000, which has replaced the German MTU MT 881 Ka-500. The K9A1 power pack is further complemented by the U.S.-made Allison X1100-5A3 transmission. This technological advancement ensures a stable, independent supply chain and enhances operational efficiency by removing external regulatory constraints. Leveraging this independence, Hanwha emphasizes that the K9A1 represents an optimal platform for local production, enabling a robust and unrestricted technology transfer roadmap. Known for a firing range of up to 54 km, the K9A1 will be showcased alongside the K10 ammunition resupply and support vehicle, demonstrating a fully automated artillery solution.
Expanding its land systems portfolio, Hanwha will present the next-generation tracked infantry fighting vehicle NIFV-ME (Next Infantry Fighting Vehicle–Middle East) and the versatile Tigon 8×8 armored vehicle with a modular design, equipped with an Active System for Protection (ASOP). This system integrates AESA radar, AI-based analysis, and EO/IR sensors to maximize vehicle survivability in an evolving battlefield environment. These platforms are supported by an advanced AI-based maintenance platform – TOMMS – enabling remote monitoring and real-time technical support regardless of location.
In response to the demand for sovereign airspace protection, Hanwha will showcase an Integrated Multi-Layer Air Defense Architecture. This system combines the capabilities of the medium-range M-SAM and long-range L-SAM systems, providing a 360-degree protective umbrella against a wide spectrum of aerial threats across all altitudes.
A key highlight will be the debut of the Multi-Function Radar (MFR), which enhances detection and tracking precision. For low-altitude threats, Hanwha will present an advanced counter-unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system featuring short-range AESA radars and the Sky Light laser air defense system. All assets are synchronized via an AI-based command-and-control (C2) system, enabling coordinated multi-asset management and rapid responses to complex threats.
The Naval Zone will feature the KSS-III–class (3,600-ton) submarine, which stands out as the world’s only diesel-electric submarine capable of launching SLBM-class ballistic missiles. Hanwha Ocean will highlight its industry-leading shipbuilding capabilities and state-of-the-art naval solutions, demonstrating readiness to address a wide range of maritime security challenges. In the Space Zone, Hanwha will present AI-based satellite imagery analysis, enabling 24/7 strategic monitoring and intelligence in all weather conditions.
Sung Il, Head of the Middle East and North Africa region at Hanwha Aerospace, said:
“By bringing our most advanced multi-domain solutions to Riyadh, we will demonstrate our commitment to being the Kingdom’s most trusted partner. We are dedicated to delivering economic value and supporting industrial growth in Saudi Arabia through strategic localization and long-term collaboration.”
