UTM ammunition is intended to enable realistic force-on-force exercises. Live-fire weapons are then converted into launchers for health-safe projectiles containing marking-agent capsules. The point of impact is marked with a colored spot. A person who is hit may at most suffer minor discoloration on exposed skin. However, eye protection and protection for other sensitive areas should still be used with this type of ammunition. Protective masks for the face and neck are usually used during firing.
