The UKM-2020S is a new version – developed in 2021 – of the UKM-2000P general-purpose machine gun, which has been in service with the Polish Armed Forces since 2016. This version differs from its predecessor in its smaller dimensions and lower weight, reduced by more than one kilogram, while retaining the remaining tactical and technical parameters, including a rate of fire of up to 900 rounds per minute.

Originally, UKM-2020S machine guns had a 440 mm barrel, a folding polymer stock, which made it possible to shorten the weapon as much as possible, a quick-detachable height-adjustable bipod, minimalist sights mounted on a maximally lowered mounting rail, and a short rail to allow the installation of a foregrip. This is used to mount the foregrip as close as possible to the ammunition bag. ZMT also developed a thermally resistant barrel cover.
The UKM-2020S chambered for 7.62 mm x 51 NATO ammunition is fed from a disintegrating belt supplied from a soft ammunition pouch holding 100- or 200-round belt sections. The weapon weighs 8.9 kg and is 844 mm long with the stock folded.
At POLSECURE 2026, a variant was presented with a barrel shortened by 10 cm and adapted for specialized ASE UTRA suppressors. The rail on the receiver cover was lowered for mounting sights, while an additional front handguard was used to mount standard bipods. At the rear, a modified stock adapter was used to mount standard Magpul-type stocks.
