On Thursday, June 11, 2026, a handover ceremony was held at the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces (DO RSZ) in Warsaw, during which Lt. Gen. Maciej Klisz handed over the duties of Operational Commander of the Polish Armed Forces to Maj. Gen. Ireneusz Nowak, PhD.

„I would like today to thank Lt. Gen. Maciej Klisz for his service ‒ one of the most difficult kinds of service one can face today, in the most difficult times for Poland, its security, and its challenges since the end of World War II,” Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said during the handover ceremony for the position of the Operational Commander o the Polish Armed Forces.
Thanking General Klisz, the head of the Ministry of National Defence emphasized that his service to date and his experience allow him to take up a position in an allied command.
„We are building a new security architecture in Europe today. Poland is a pillar of building the security architecture in Europe. Without Poland, there is no safe Europe. Without these achievements, without these skills that are present in the Operational Command. (…) I believe that this new mission now beginning will be a great source of satisfaction for those whom you, General, will command on behalf of Poland, and a source of hope for a better tomorrow for Europe and for greater security,” the head of the Ministry of National Defence said.
„A great challenge. A great mission. A very high bar. But I know that you will meet the requirements and expectations, and that you will make real all our desires and dreams of a Poland that is always safe, of Poland as the most beautiful place to live for our loved ones, for our children and grandchildren. Because that is, in truth, the value for which it is worth sacrificing hours of separation from one’s family and loved ones,” the head of the Ministry of National Defence said, addressing the new Operational Commander of the Polish Armed Forces.
„General Klisz’s most important challenges included the need to ensure security in Polish airspace, as well as the protection and defense of the land border, especially along the section with Belarus. General Klisz and his staff prepared and effectively implemented the concepts and plans for the operations mentioned earlier by the prime minister: ‘Safe Podlasie,’ ‘Eastern Aurora,’ and Operation ‘Horyzont.’ During his command, there was also a need to manage the risks posed to contingents in Lebanon and Iraq by conflicts in the Middle East. Thanks to proactivity, anticipation of threats, and the decisiveness characteristic of a special operations forces officer, these risks were effectively managed by General Klisz. This was also possible thanks to the strong relationships he had built with our allies. All of this translated into outcomes that brought security to our homeland,” said Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces Gen. Wiesław Kukuła.
„The Operational Command is not an ordinary place. It is a place where state security ceases to be an abstract concept. It becomes something concrete: a decision, an order, readiness, responsibility for the soldier, for the operation, for the state. It is here, around the clock, seven days a week, 365 days a year, that information, assessments, procedures, and national and allied capabilities come together so that Poland can respond effectively, quickly, and professionally. It is here that 16 operations are conducted on a daily basis, 10 of them outside the country. When I assumed the duties of Operational Commander of the Polish Armed Forces, I was aware that I was not taking on an ordinary, peaceful position. I was accepting responsibility at a time of real threat, military, hybrid, information, and political pressure. These years were not a time of administration. They were a time of trial. (…) I learned one thing: in such moments, chaos does not prevail u2012 procedure does. Haste does not prevail ‒ cool-headed assessment does. No single person prevails. What prevails is the team and a state capable of action,” Lt. Gen. Maciej Klisz said of his service at the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces.
The Gen. Bronisław Kwiatkowski Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces is the main command authority responsible for the operational command of Armed Forces elements placed under its authority in accordance with a decision of the Minister of National Defense. It is responsible for planning and commanding troops and assigned non-military elements in joint, peacekeeping, rescue, and humanitarian operations, as well as in activities conducted to prevent acts of terrorism or eliminate their consequences.
The Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces plans, organizes, and conducts exercises, and assesses the capabilities of forces and assets declared for operations. It verifies the readiness of duty forces and assets, as well as those assigned to tasks outside the country; exercises national command over them; and supervises special operations.
