On Friday, February 13, 2026, the German group Rheinmetall AG announced that it had concluded its first implementing contract, worth approximately 200 million EUR, with the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA), part of the NATO Support and Procurement Organisation, for the supply of 120 mm × 570 tank ammunition. The end users are various member states of the North Atlantic Alliance.

The framework agreement, concluded in July 2025 under the Basic Contractual Instrument (BCI) format with the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA), sets out the terms and all technical specifications for various types of 120 mm × 570 NATO-standard tank ammunition. NATO member states and partner countries may use the framework agreement to streamline the procurement of ammunition from Rheinmetall AG.
They may place orders directly through NATO NSPA, significantly simplifying the acquisition process for 120 mm tank ammunition within NATO. This enables Rheinmetall to further strengthen its position as a leading supplier of 120 mm tank ammunition.
In operational use by many countries since 1980, Rheinmetall’s 120 mm smoothbore gun technology (Rh-120 in the L44/L55/L55A1 variants and the licensed M256 L44) has become a widely recognized main armament system among the armed forces of Germany, NATO, and other allied nations worldwide. It is the standard weapon system of the Leopard 2 family and the M1 Abrams. Owing to its outstanding performance and remaining growth potential, Rheinmetall can continue to offer innovative and threat-appropriate technical solutions in the 120 mm caliber over the medium term.
Earlier, on December 8, 2025, Rheinmetall AG received another order worth several hundred million euros for the supply of 120 mm × 570 live and training ammunition for the Leopard 2 family under a framework agreement with the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (Bundesamt für Ausrüstung, Informationstechnik und Nutzung der Bundeswehr, BAAINBw), signed on July 13, 2023. The latest amendment increased the total value of the framework agreement to approximately 4 billion EUR.
