The EU–Ukraine Drone Alliance was established by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Defence Industry and Space (DG DEFIS) under the Drone Deal initiative. The platform responds to the need to accelerate the development of EU capabilities in unmanned and counter-drone systems by drawing on industry expertise and lessons learned from the war in Ukraine.
“The war in Ukraine has shown that the development of unmanned systems must be based on knowledge-sharing between industry and end users. The EU–Ukraine Drone Alliance creates a mechanism for bringing these lessons to the European level. We are pleased to have been involved in the initiative from the outset,” said Piotr Wojciechowski, President of WB Group.
Members of the EU–Ukraine Drone Alliance will help shape technology development priorities, recommendations for future European programs, and solutions supporting the growth of shared industrial and operational capabilities.
The founding members include leading companies developing unmanned technologies and actively contributing to the European drone ecosystem. A select group of nine unmanned systems manufacturers from the European Union and nine from Ukraine was chosen to participate.
WB Group’s inclusion reflects its position as a leading European manufacturer of unmanned solutions. For 30 years, the Polish company has designed and produced advanced reconnaissance, command-and-control, and strike systems used by NATO and Ukrainian armed forces.
One of the foundations of these capabilities is WB Group’s long-standing presence in Ukraine. This includes equipment deliveries, cooperation with the Ukrainian military and security services, and industrial collaboration involving the joint development of advanced unmanned systems and their production by the Group’s Ukrainian subsidiary.
WB Group has operated in Ukraine since 2014, supplying advanced reconnaissance systems, including its flagship FlyEye platform. WB Ukraine, established in 2019, provides support and carries out manufacturing activities, enabling the continuous improvement of systems based on lessons learned from their operational use.
WB Group was among the first companies to supply unmanned systems to Ukraine. The FlyEye unmanned aerial system has been used by Ukrainian operators since 2015, while Warmate-family loitering munitions have been in service since 2017. Both remain in continuous use. The Group’s long-term presence and close contact with operators enable it to continuously refine its solutions and develop successive generations of systems.
