Advanced Protection Systems (APS), a Polish leader in counter-drone technology whose products are helping protect Ukraine’s skies, has unveiled an interceptor drone that autonomously tracks and knocks down unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) through direct collision, a powerful and cost-effective solution to the threat.

The new interceptor is part of APS’s SKYctrl anti-drone system, which integrates FIELDctrl radars, various neutralization tools (effectors) and CyView C2 command and control software. Using machine learning algorithms, the system can differentiate between drones and objects such as birds, while providing real-time threat detection and reporting.
SKYctrl has proven its effectiveness on the battlefield during the war in Ukraine, helping counter the threat from the Russian army’s drones. Elements of the system are deployed worldwide by military forces and operators of critical infrastructure sites, including power plants, refineries and telecommunications networks.
The widespread use of combat drones in the Ukraine war inspired us to create innovative solutions like the interceptor drone, said Maciej Klemm, co-founder and CEO of APS. The interceptors use machine learning to work with a high level of autonomy, relieving the burden on human operators.
The interceptor drones are guided by radar systems combined with advanced video tracking technology. They can work in groups, communicating with each other to assign targets and neutralize drone swarms. Unlike conventional weapons, the interceptor drone carries no explosives, making it a versatile solution for both military and civilian applications.

The complete SKYctrl systems use a variety of effectors, including radio frequency jammers, small-caliber cannon and now the interceptor drone. APS’s flexible architecture allows integration with other tools, such as machine guns and laser weapons, to meet a range of defense needs.
Beyond military applications, the interceptor drone offers a non-explosive alternative to jammers for protecting civilian airspace, including airports, from invasive drones. This technology is expected to be highly effective in ensuring public safety without disrupting other electronic systems.
APS presented its interceptor drone for the first time at the MSPO defense industry trade show in Kielce, Poland, Sept. 3-6.
