On Thursday, August 20, 2026, in Płock’s Radziwie district, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz took part in a press conference devoted to the current operation and prospects for the further development of Poland’s air defense system. The meeting was held within the area of responsibility of the 37th Air Defense Missile Squadron, part of the 3rd Warsaw Air Defense Missile Brigade.

“For several years now, we have been building an integrated air defense system for the Polish state. It is layered, and that is the most important word that needs to be repeated again and again. We have Wisła, we have Narew, we have Pilica and Pilica+, and most recently the counter-drone defense program has been incorporated into the air defense system. The goal is to protect Polish airspace as effectively as possible. We are still in the process of building this system, and I want to state that very clearly and directly. Not all of its elements have been delivered yet. Some tasks will be implemented in 2026, then in 2027, while some systems will arrive in subsequent years,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.
As the head of the Ministry of National Defence emphasized, Poland is currently protected using both national and allied assets.
“The past few days have also shown a high level of allied aircraft activity over Poland. Exercises are under way. The Alliance is demonstrating its ability to respond rapidly. Let me remind you that Operation Eastern Sentry is ongoing to protect NATO’s eastern flank. Baltic Sentry is aimed at protecting the entire Baltic Sea region. So there are many different components that together contribute to the security of the Polish state, the defense minister said during the press conference.”
During the conference, the minister also addressed the operation of air defense units and their daily service in protecting Polish airspace.
“This requires a major effort from several thousand soldiers serving in the brigade to protect Polish airspace. It carries out its missions at various locations across Poland,” the deputy prime minister noted.
Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz also referred to the security situation on NATO’s eastern flank and the lessons learned from the war in Ukraine.
“Poland must build a layered defense against different types of threats. As we can see in Ukraine – and we are drawing lessons from the war in Ukraine – every day brings different threats. These are not, as one might think, only drones. Very often they are ballistic or cruise missiles. This is such a serious threat that the time available to respond is measured not in minutes, but in seconds,” the minister said.
The minister stressed that the elements of the air defense system currently in use are those that have already been delivered and entered service. The system’s final architecture is still being developed, with additional capabilities to be introduced in the coming years.
“This is a program worth more than 200 billion zloty. There is no other area of Polish security in which so much money has been invested as in air defense, missile defense and counter-drone defense—in other words, the air defense of the Polish state. This shows how important it is to properly deploy the forces and assets currently at our disposal. We do not yet have the final number of Patriot batteries, we do not yet have the entire Narew system or all of the Pilica systems. We have what is currently available—what has already been delivered, fielded, and put into operation and service,” Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized.
The defense minister noted that the deployment of currently available systems reflects the ongoing assessment of threats, existing capabilities, and requirements related to protecting the facilities most important to national security.
“All systems that can be used today are at the military’s disposal and have been allocated and deployed in accordance with military recommendations based on the information we receive, the capabilities available to us, and the experience we have gained,” the defense minister stressed.
