During the Doha International Maritime Defence Exhibition and Conference (DIMDEX 2026), scheduled for January 19–22 in Doha, ST Engineering (STE) unveiled an amphibious variant of the Terrex s5 wheeled infantry fighting vehicle. The base variant made its debut at the Singapore Airshow 2024.

The showcased vehicle measures 8.3 m in length, 3 m in width, and 2.7 m in height without a turret system installed. Its payload capacity is 12 tons, and it is capable of transporting 12 soldiers. In the presented amphibious configuration, the vehicle is able to operate at Sea State 3. Development work began in March 2025 and was revealed a month later during the presentation in Kazakhstan of the Terrex–Barys A 8×8 amphibious armored personnel carrier prototype – a licensed version of the Terrex II. A total of 200 vehicles are being produced for that user.
The amphibious kit for the Terrex s5 consists of two propellers, enabling waterborne speeds of 8–10 km/h. In addition, the hull buoyancy system, propulsion control, and associated equipment required structural modifications to the hull. As a result, the vehicle’s armor protection level was reduced from STANAG 4569 Level 6 (standard ballistic protection) to Level 4, while mine protection was reduced to Levels 4a and 4b. Consequently, combat weight decreased from 35–36 tons to 32 tons.
Thanks to its independent suspension, the vehicle is capable of operating in difficult terrain. Both the approach and departure angles are 40 degrees, maximum side slope is 60%, and climbing capability is 30%. The Terrex s5 can overcome vertical obstacles up to 0.7 m, trenches up to 2 m wide, and ford water obstacles up to 1.8 m deep. Operational range is 1,000 km, with a maximum road speed of 120 km/h. Power is provided by a 711 hp Caterpillar diesel engine, coupled with an automatic transmission offering seven forward gears and two reverse gears, along with independent suspension and hydraulic power management. The maximum armament supported by a turret system is a 30 mm automatic cannon. The amphibious version is fitted with a light remote weapon station ADDER Light, whereas the earlier variant featured the ADDER 30 mm system.
Additionally, thanks to onboard lithium-ion batteries, the wheeled infantry fighting vehicle can operate solely on electric power, enabling silent movement to the area of operations for distances of up to 50 km. The additional power supply also extends system operating time without engaging the main engine (silent watch). The combined output of the internal combustion engine and electric drive totals 1,200 hp. The built-in batteries and advanced power distribution network allow for the integration of advanced battlefield management systems based on artificial intelligence protocols aboard the Terrex s5.
Situational awareness is provided by the commander’s and gunner’s observation devices as well as integrated cameras. Supported by artificial intelligence, the crew can observe the surroundings of the vehicle in virtually every direction. In addition, both the commander’s and driver’s stations are equipped with standard periscopes. The driver monitors the route via three displays arranged to provide a panoramic view, complemented by an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) that supports vehicle operation. The driver also has access to an automated obstacle detection system, which displays a bird’s-eye view of the terrain surrounding the vehicle.
Thanks to its advanced digital communications systems, the Terrex s5 is intended to operate in cooperation with unmanned ground platforms under the Manned/Unmanned Teaming (MUM-T) concept. Integration of drive-by-wire controls and remote driving systems is also possible.
It is also worth noting that on January 20, the Qatari Ministry of Defense–affiliated company Barzan Holdings signed a contract worth 1.5 billion QAR with ST Engineering. No details have been disclosed; it was only stated that the agreement concerns the provision of services.
