On Monday, August 17, 2026, German group Rheinmetall AG announced that it had signed a contract worth more than 500 million EUR with the Bundeswehr’s procurement authority, Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw), for the delivery of a further 149 mobile medical stations forming part of the Modular Medical Facilities system.

The contract modification signed in July this year is based on a framework agreement concluded in December 2024 and represents the largest order ever received by the contractor, Rheinmetall subsidiary Rheinmetall Project Solutions GmbH. Production of the mobile medical stations is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2027. This brings the total number of systems ordered by the German Armed Forces to 165, with a combined gross value exceeding 600 million EUR.
The original framework agreement covered the delivery of up to 137 mobile medical stations, while the first implementation order signed in parallel provided for 10 armored and six unarmored systems. The framework agreement also included options for additional armored and unarmored systems. Training for the relevant military personnel will also be provided.
The mobile medical stations form part of the Modular Medical Facilities system. Within the Bundeswehr’s Central Medical Service (Zentraler Sanitätsdienst), these highly mobile stations provide soldiers with initial emergency medical care. If required, four soldiers can set up or dismantle the systems in a very short time. This reflects one of the lessons learned from the war in Ukraine, namely that highly mobile systems are essential for medical support.
Each medical station consists of two containers that can be operated together or separately. Each container is equipped with a generator and air-conditioning system and can operate independently for several days. If one generator fails, the entire system can continue operating using the generator in the other container.
The system includes a fully equipped emergency treatment station and four additional treatment stations. All medical equipment is mounted on Airliner rails and can be configured according to user requirements.
The system can be transported by various vehicles used by the Bundeswehr, including RMMV HX2 trucks. It can be leveled longitudinally and laterally. A custom lifting system was developed for this purpose, as no off-the-shelf solution was capable of meeting the specified requirements.
The Bundeswehr is ordering both armored and unarmored versions of the system, which involves modifications to the existing design. The new medical station, however, replaces a complex tent-based setup with a highly modular 3:1 container manufactured by Rheinmetall Mobile Systeme GmbH. The new system can be transported and deployed in more difficult terrain.
