On Thursday, May 28, 2026, Belgian Finance and Defence Ministers Johan Jambon and Theo Francken signed an agreement under the SAFE (Security Action for Europe) loan program with EU Commissioner for Defence and Space Andrius Kubilius and EU Commissioner for Budget, Anti-Fraud and Public Administration Piotr Serafin. Belgium will receive up to 8,340,027,698 EUR.

Belgium was among the first eight countries to receive the European Commission’s green light, on January 15 this year, for its submitted national plans under the SAFE program. The others were Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Spain, Portugal and Romania, for a total of 38 billion EUR.
According to earlier information from the Belgian Ministry of Defence, the European funds will be allocated to procurement in the areas of air defense; drones and unmanned systems, including counter-drone systems; precision ammunition and missiles of various calibers; satellite systems and protection of space infrastructure; and protection against hybrid and cyber threats. Minister Theo Francken recently confirmed that the funds will be used to accelerate investment in modern capabilities that are crucial in today’s conflicts, in cooperation with European partners.

Earlier, agreements with the European Commission were signed by Poland (43,734,100,805 EUR), Lithuania (6,375,487,000 EUR), Croatia (1,700,000,000 EUR) and Romania (16,680,055,394 EUR).
The next countries will be, in alphabetical order: Bulgaria (3,261,700,000 EUR), Cyprus (1,181,503,924 EUR), the Czech Republic (2,060,000,000 EUR), Denmark (46,796,822 EUR), Estonia (2,343,897,000 EUR), Finland (1,000,000,000 EUR), France (16,216,720,524 EUR), Greece (787,669,283 EUR), Spain (1,000,000,000 EUR), Latvia (3,497,870,000 EUR), Portugal (5,841,179,332 EUR), Slovakia (2,316,674,361 EUR) and Italy (14,900,000,000 EUR). The decision on Hungary (16,216,720,524 EUR) has still not been announced.
