Saronic selects Brownsville, Texas, for Port Alpha shipyard

On Thursday, July 16, 2026, U.S. company Saronic Technologies announced that it had selected Brownsville, Texas, as the preferred location for Port Alpha, a next-generation naval shipyard that will build autonomous surface vessels. The investment, valued at more than 3 billion USD, is intended to help restore U.S. maritime power and significantly expand the country’s shipbuilding capacity.

According to the press release, the announcement marks a major milestone in Saronic’s mission to restore U.S. shipbuilding capacity at scale. Port Alpha, initially presented as a vision for the future of the maritime industry, is now moving from concept to reality through a planned investment intended to create one of the world’s most advanced shipyards dedicated to building unmanned, autonomous surface vessels.

The project is expected to generate more than 160 billion USD in regional economic impact for Cameron County and 264.5 billion USD for the state of Texas, while creating up to 10,000 direct jobs. This would make Port Alpha one of the largest economic development projects in modern Texas history. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with Port Alpha expected to open in 2028.

Timing is critical. One of President Donald Trump’s first actions in office was to issue an executive order aimed at restoring American maritime dominance. This was followed by federal initiatives such as the SHIPS for America Act and the Maritime Action Plan, both of which call for a generational rebuilding of the U.S. shipbuilding industry.

These efforts recognize that economic security and national security are inseparably linked, and that restoring U.S. shipbuilding capacity is essential to both. Port Alpha will expand domestic production capacity and strengthen the country’s ability to meet commercial and defense requirements, while helping close the growing shipbuilding gap with foreign competitors.

Following a year-long nationwide search that evaluated sites along the East, West, and Gulf Coasts, Brownsville was selected after a rigorous assessment of workforce availability, infrastructure readiness, land availability, logistics, and expansion potential. Initially occupying 835 acres at the Port of Brownsville, with the potential to expand to nearly 4,400 acres, Port Alpha will include a shipyard and manufacturing facility capable of producing vessels up to 850 feet, or approximately 259 m, in length. Future expansion could support the construction of vessels exceeding 1,200 feet, or approximately 366 m. The site will offer hundreds of acres of waterfront access, connections to deepwater channels, multimodal logistics infrastructure, and room for long-term expansion – everything required to establish a next-generation shipbuilding hub.

Over the next decade, Port Alpha is expected to create up to 10,000 high-quality direct jobs, including skilled trades such as welding and machining, as well as advanced roles in robotics, software engineering, and naval architecture. The project responds to nationwide calls to rebuild the maritime workforce by creating new opportunities for skilled workers at the intersection of shipbuilding and advanced technology. Saronic will work with the State of Texas, Cameron County, and local educational institutions – from regional technical colleges to leading state universities and research institutions – to develop training and apprenticeship programs designed to support long-term industrial growth and establish South Texas as a center of excellence for advanced maritime manufacturing.

Port Alpha builds on Saronic’s growing presence in the shipbuilding sector. In early 2025, the company acquired a shipyard in Franklin, Louisiana, where it is investing 300 million USD to expand production capacity by 300,000 square feet, or approximately 28,000 m². The facility will continue producing the 180-foot, or approximately 55 m, Marauder medium unmanned surface vessel (MUSV), whose prototype was designed and launched in less than a year. Together, the two facilities represent a multibillion-dollar private-sector investment in rebuilding U.S. shipbuilding capacity, advancing autonomous maritime systems, and strengthening the country’s industrial resilience (Saronic Technologies launches Marauder medium unmanned surface vessel).

Port Alpha is more than a shipyard. It represents a new model for American shipbuilding – one that combines advanced manufacturing, software-defined production, and autonomy on an unprecedented scale. To maintain this advantage, Saronic is forming strategic partnerships with leading manufacturers, emerging shipbuilding technology providers, and key suppliers. These partnerships are intended to ensure that the latest solutions continuously strengthen and expand Port Alpha’s production architecture, while complementing Saronic’s in-house expertise. In this way, Port Alpha embodies the transformation envisioned in the national maritime strategy, using technology to enhance deterrence, resilience, and operational flexibility. As construction progresses, Saronic will continue working with federal, state, and local partners to establish the industrial foundation required for the next generation of American maritime power.

It is also worth noting that on July 13 this year, three Saronic Corsair unmanned surface vessels were reportedly used for the first time in U.S. Navy history to strike targets at the Iranian naval port of Bandar Abbas.
