Polish Citizen Convicted
On January 29, 2026, the District Court in Zamość (District Court in Zamość) delivered a verdict against Polish citizen Paweł K., charged in connection with declaring his readiness to cooperate with the intelligence services of the Russian Federation. The court found him guilty of the offenses as charged and imposed a cumulative sentence of three years and six months of imprisonment.
The investigation was conducted by Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) under the supervision of the Masovian Branch of the National Prosecutor’s Office. The proceedings produced extensive evidence indicating the commission of offenses under Article 130 §3 of the Polish Criminal Code (espionage) and Article 263 §2 (illegal possession of weapons and ammunition). The findings established that between December 2, 2022, and February 13, 2023, Paweł K. used electronic means of communication to declare his readiness to act on behalf of a foreign intelligence service against the Republic of Poland. He expressed a willingness to join the structures of the Russian Federation’s military intelligence and to carry out intelligence tasks on its behalf, including the transmission of information concerning security at Rzeszów–Jasionka Airport. Disclosure of such information could have facilitated planning an attack on the life of a foreign head of state – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. In addition, the defendant declared readiness to join a diversionary group known as the Wagner Group as well as Military Unit No. 29155 of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation (GRU). The verdict is not final.
