During the night of July 8–9, units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine struck a number of important military and defense-related economic targets as part of efforts to reduce the Russian Federation’s military and economic potential. In the Sea of Azov, 12 tankers, one tugboat, and one dry cargo vessel used in support of the Russian state were hit. Ukrainian military intelligence is currently assessing the extent of the damage and the effects of the strikes.
The vessels were used in particular to deliver fuel and lubricants to Russian forces, as well as to transport crude oil and petroleum products in circumvention of international sanctions. They supported energy exports, one of the key sources of funding for Russia’s war against Ukraine. The vessels are believed to have been relatively small, as was the case in attacks carried out in recent days, when 19 tankers were reportedly hit (Ukraine continues strikes on Russia’s petrochemical industry).
All strikes were conducted under the coordination of the Deep Strike Center of the Unmanned Systems Forces Grouping.

The Yug Rusi oil terminal in Bataysk, Rostov Oblast, was also attacked. A fire was reported at the facility, while the extent of the damage and the effects of the strike are still being assessed.
The facility handles petroleum products for export and is used to supply fuel and lubricants to Russian forces operating in the southern sector. It also generates foreign currency revenues used to finance Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine.
Ukrainian drones also destroyed a Russian ammunition depot near Sorokyne in the occupied Luhansk region.
