M-ATVs in the Polish Armed Forces
As a reminder, on July 12, 2024, information appeared on the social media channels of the 1st Pomeranian Logistics Brigade about the acceptance of a batch of several dozen M1240A1 M-ATVs in order to adapt them to the requirements of the Polish Armed Forces and missions abroad. The vehicles were later assigned to support the Polish Military Contingent KFOR mission in Kosovo.
The vehicles were ordered on July 31, 2023, under an Excess Defense Articles (EDA) agreement. Subsequently, in October, 79 vehicles were selected as part of a Joint Visual Inspection (JVI). Delivery of all vehicles was completed on January 6, 2024.
Earlier, the Special Forces operated 45 vehicles of this type, which are in service with Military Unit Agat, with 39 vehicles, and the Military Unit of Commandos, with six. The used vehicles were transferred free of charge by the U.S. Department of Defense in February 2015 under an EDA agreement initiated in 2014. They reached the Special Forces in spring 2016.
Interestingly, Military Unit Nil, which as the contracting authority is responsible for servicing the vehicles at Rosomak S.A., a company partnered with Oshkosh Defense, conducted a procedure for modifications to these vehicles, but it was canceled on June 13, 2024, after the initial bid was rejected.
The vehicles are based on a modified MTVR truck chassis. Their development drew on earlier experience from Iraq and Afghanistan, where mine-resistant vehicles, mainly Cougar and MaxxPro vehicles, were used. The former also entered service with the Polish Armed Forces.
