On Sunday, June 7, 2026, Iran launched ballistic missiles toward Israel in response to Israeli airstrikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut. It was Iran’s first direct missile attack on Israel since the April 2026 ceasefire. Iranian authorities said it was retaliation for Israel’s attack on Hezbollah and warned of further action if strikes on Lebanon continued. The Israel Defense Forces said all missiles had been intercepted and that no direct casualties or damage had been reported on Israeli territory.
Since the initial ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon/Hezbollah on April 16, 2026, announced by the United States, the truce had been repeatedly violated by both sides. In the following weeks, sporadic exchanges of fire took place. In May, the situation escalated: Israel carried out airstrikes and limited ground operations in southern Lebanon, expanding the buffer zone, while Hezbollah responded with drone and rocket attacks on northern Israel and the killing of Israeli soldiers.
In early June, another attempt was made to revive the ceasefire, under which Israel pledged, among other things, not to attack Beirut’s southern suburbs. Despite this, mutual shelling and Israeli strikes on Hezbollah commanders in southern Lebanon continued in the following days. It was not until June 7 that Israel struck Hezbollah targets in the Ad-Dahiya al-Janubiya district of southern Beirut ‒ the first such attack on the capital since the April ceasefire. At least two people were killed and 11 were wounded. The strike prompted an immediate response from Iran, which for months had threatened escalation in the event of attacks on Beirut.
Iran launched several ballistic missiles in multiple salvos, some of which were intercepted by Israeli missile defense systems. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) warned that the attack was a warning. U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to respond to Iran, but the Israel Defense Forces later reported that it had struck military targets in southern and central Iran.
