On Friday, April 3, 2026, Iranian media published photographs of the wreckage of an alleged U.S. Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II multirole aircraft reportedly shot down earlier that day by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) over the country. However, according to available materials, it was in fact a Boeing F-15E Strike Eagle multirole aircraft. The United States denies the claims.

According to the markings, the aircraft belonged to the 48th Fighter Wing (Liberty Wing) from RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, England. The distinctive red stripe within a white border indicates assignment to the 494th Fighter Squadron “Panthers.” The unit is currently deployed to Jordan as part of Operation Epic Fury as the 494th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron.
Twelve aircraft were deployed to the area of responsibility of United States Central Command (CENTCOM) on January 17 of this year, most likely to Muwaffak Salti Air Base in Jordan.
Other wreckage
Interestingly, according to the leadership of Khatam al-Anbiya, responsible within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for engineering and construction support, a second F-35 was also reportedly hit over central Iran – but the evidence presented was the same F-15E wreckage.
Earlier, the Tasnim News Agency published video footage of what it claimed was the interception of the first F-35 near Qeshm Island, located in the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, CENTCOM denied the incident and the loss of any combat aircraft in the region.
