From May 13 to 15 this year, the BSDA 2026 defense industry trade fair (Black Sea Defense, Aerospace and Security) is being held in Bucharest. Romanian company Aerostar Bacău and Israel’s Elbit Systems presented a prototype of the modernized LAROM (Lansator ROmanesc Modernizat) multiple rocket launcher on a ROMAN 26.410 chassis.

The key element of the modernization package was the integration of new rocket ammunition, significantly increasing the launcher’s engagement range. Until now, it used standard unguided 122 mm Grad-system ammunition, enabling fire at ranges of up to 20 km, with a maximum load of 40 rockets in two launch modules, as well as Israeli 160 mm LAR Mk. IV rockets, with a range of up to 45 km and a high-explosive fragmentation/cluster warhead, with a maximum load of 26 rockets in two launch modules.
The upgraded system is now being offered with the capability to use ammunition known from Israel’s Lynx launchers and their export versions, PULS and EuroPULS (Precise & Universal Launching System):
- 122 mm AccuLAR-122 guided rockets, 18 carried at a time, with a 25 kg unitary fragmentation warhead, a range of up to 35 km, and an accuracy of up to 10 meters thanks to satellite and inertial navigation.
- 306 mm EXTRA (Extended Range Artillery) guided rockets, up to four carried at a time, with a range of up to 150 km, carrying a 120 kg unitary fragmentation warhead with an accuracy of up to 10 meters. The rocket is 4.7 m long and has a launch weight of 570 kg. Its rocket motor uses solid propellant, while guidance is provided by satellite and inertial navigation. It was designed in 2014 and has been in series production since 2016.
LAROM was developed on the basis of the APRA-40 launcher, a local version of the Soviet BM-21 Grad system, and entered service in 2001. A total of 54 launchers were introduced into service with the 8th Tactical Operational Missile Brigade (Brigada 8 Rachete Operative Tactice “Alexandru Ioan Cuza”).
