Russian cruise missile crashes in eastern Poland

On Thursday, July 30, 2026, the Armed Forces Operational Command reported that, during a large-scale Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine, an unidentified object violated Polish airspace and crashed near the village of Tarnawa-Kolonia in the Lublin region. Available evidence indicates that it was a Russian air-launched Raduga Kh-101 cruise missile (Izdeliye 504A; DIA/NATO reporting name: AS-23A Kodiak).

At 2:16 a.m., the Armed Forces Operational Command issued the following statement:

“Attention. Due to the activity of the Russian Federation’s long-range aviation, which is carrying out strikes against targets in Ukraine, military aircraft have begun operating in Polish airspace.

In accordance with established procedures, the Armed Forces Operational Command has activated the necessary forces and assets at its disposal. Fighter aircraft and an airborne early warning aircraft have begun operations, while ground-based air-defense and radar surveillance systems have been placed on alert.

These measures are preventive and are intended to secure and protect Polish airspace, particularly in areas adjacent to those under threat.

The Armed Forces Operational Command is monitoring the current situation, while its subordinate forces and assets remain ready to respond immediately.”

At approximately 3:50 a.m., air-raid sirens were activated in Lublin and Krasnystaw.

At the same time, Russia was carrying out attacks using Kh-101 cruise missiles against targets including Lviv and Ternopil.

The first reports suggesting a possible violation of Polish airspace then began to emerge.

In the early morning, local news outlet lublin112.pl reported that residents near Tarnawa-Kolonia, including those in the nearby village of Targowisko, had heard a powerful explosion. A crater resulting from the blast was subsequently discovered in a field between wooded areas. Fire crews, police officers, and a military helicopter were dispatched to the scene.

At 7:07 a.m., the Armed Forces Operational Command confirmed the violation of Polish airspace:

“Attention. During the night, national and allied surveillance systems detected intense combat activity by the Russian Federation’s long-range aviation. To ensure the security of Polish airspace, the combat readiness of air-defense assets was raised, including fighter aircraft on quick-reaction alert and an airborne early warning aircraft.

The Armed Forces Operational Command continuously provided information about the potential threat to the relevant services and appropriate centers responsible for security and crisis management. A constant exchange of information was maintained, enabling a coordinated response to the developing situation.

Radar assets of the national air-defense system monitored the activity of at least a dozen missiles operating over western Ukraine which, due to their direction of flight, could have posed a potential threat to Polish airspace.

One of the objects came closest to the border of the Republic of Poland. At 3:29 a.m., it approached to within approximately 5 km before changing course and heading east.

At 3:40 a.m., an unidentified object traveling westward was detected in Polish airspace. An F-16 fighter aircraft on quick-reaction alert was dispatched to identify and intercept it. At 3:46 a.m., before the object could be conclusively identified, it disappeared from radar. To verify and ultimately confirm the technical indications from the radar systems, a Mi-24 helicopter was sent to the area of the object’s last known position. The helicopter crew located the probable crash site in an uninhabited area near Tarnawa-Kolonia in the Lublin region. A Ground Search and Rescue Team and the relevant services were dispatched to the scene. Operational and security activities are ongoing at the site.

The Armed Forces Operational Command remains in constant contact with the services involved in the operation.”

The Police also issued a statement:

“Early this morning, we received a report from the Emergency Notification Center that a powerful explosion had been heard in Biłgoraj County, between the villages of Tarnawa-Kolonia and Biskupice.

The duty officer dispatched police patrols to the area. Shortly after 5:00 a.m., officers discovered a crater and scattered fragments of an unidentified object in a field between Tarnawa-Kolonia and Tokary, approximately 2 km from the nearest buildings. The area was secured by police. The relevant services were notified, including the Military Police, the Internal Security Agency, the Military Counterintelligence Service, and the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Lublin. Police counterterrorism officers were also dispatched to the scene. Operations are ongoing.”

On July 30, a coordination team meeting was held in Lublin with the participation of Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland Donald Tusk, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, military commanders, and the heads of services responsible for national security. The meeting reviewed the overnight operation to protect Polish airspace in connection with the Russian Federation’s large-scale missile and drone attack against Ukraine.

“Beginning in the late evening hours, Operational Commander Lt. Gen. Ireneusz Nowak placed all national air-defense systems on the highest state of readiness, activating both national and allied services responsible for protecting Polish airspace. All services are integrated, including the Polish Armed Forces, Police, State Fire Service, and intelligence agencies. I would like to thank everyone here in the Lublin region and at the Armed Forces Operational Command who once again remained on duty throughout a difficult night,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.

During the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz provided a detailed account of the overnight operations and the Polish and allied forces and assets that had been activated.

“What forces and assets were involved? They included Polish F-16 quick-reaction alert pairs, which had been operating near the Polish-Ukrainian border from approximately 2:00 a.m., awaiting further orders. Reconnaissance aircraft were also deployed over Polish airspace, along with allied aerial refueling aircraft that took off from the Federal Republic of Germany and operated over Polish territory,” the Minister of National Defence emphasized.

Poland’s ground-based air-defense systems were also active. The quick-reaction alert aircraft carried out all orders issued by the Armed Forces Operational Commander concerning operations in the airspace and the tracking of the object, and were prepared to shoot it down. The Operational Commander was fully prepared and had all the authority necessary to issue such an order, the Deputy Prime Minister said.

The Deputy Prime Minister also addressed the ongoing activities at the site where fragments of the object had been found.

“Operational activities aimed at identifying the object are currently underway at the scene. Explosive ordnance examinations are being conducted to locate all fragments of the object and determine precisely what type of object is involved. The hypothesis presented by the Prime Minister – that it was a Kh-101 missile, one of several dozen launched over Ukraine that night – is currently the most likely. It must, of course, still be confirmed. All operations involving Polish and allied aircraft are also coordinated with NATO’s Allied Joint Force Command. NATO commanders are being kept continuously informed. We will provide a comprehensive report. All of the country’s highest authorities – the Prime Minister and the President – are also receiving continuous reports from all state services,” Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz noted.

The Minister of National Defence drew attention to the change in the direction of Russian strikes and the proximity of combat operations to the Polish border:

“This was one of the largest attacks against western Ukraine. In recent months, attacks had generally been directed against Kyiv, the surrounding area, and eastern Ukraine. This attack also targeted western Ukraine. Coordination with other services is, as the Prime Minister said, an absolute priority for us. Analyzing the situation, sharing information, and making decisions – this is the operating model that has been adopted and once again proved effective during the past night. The situation we observed over Ukraine initially involved more than 20 objects located close to Polish airspace. Ukrainian Armed Forces MiG-29 fighters were also operating very close to Polish airspace. This also required coordination with the Ukrainian side and the exchange of information,” the Minister of National Defence noted.

The Government Center For Security (RCB) on the morning activation of warning sirens:

“Warning sirens are the fastest means of alerting the public

Following the violation of the airspace of the Republic of Poland, the warning siren system was activated in 17 counties. The measure was taken immediately after information was received from the Ministry of National Defence’s Air Operations Center, using the fastest and most direct method of warning residents of an immediate threat.

In situations requiring an immediate response, warning sirens remain the most effective and fastest notification tool. During the incident in question, the critical period was approximately 13 minutes. Within that time window, it was essential to reach as many people as possible immediately, which was made possible by activating the warning system. At the same time, a threat alert was distributed to the media.

All procedures and information mechanisms that were activated functioned correctly and in accordance with established operational protocols.

It is standard practice for the services responsible for public safety to conduct a detailed review of every incident in order to continuously improve procedures.

• RCB will review all mechanisms used to inform the public of threats through warning signals.
• A rule will be introduced requiring an SMS message to be sent immediately after the danger has passed, so that residents have full clarity regarding the course of events.“

Raduga Kh-101

The Kh-101 cruise missile (Izdeliye 504A; DIA/NATO reporting name: AS-23A Kodiak), developed by Russia’s MKB Raduga design bureau in Dubna, is a 2,400 kg air-launched weapon that normally carries a single conventional 9E-2648 high-explosive warhead weighing 450 kg, with penetrating and cluster warheads also available. Its strike range is approximately 4,000 km, according to operational data from its use in Russia’s war against Ukraine, compared with earlier estimates of 2,500–2,800 km.

It can therefore reach almost any part of Europe except Portugal, assuming, for example, that Tu-95MS or Tu-160 strategic bombers — the latter were reported to have taken off today — operate over Russia’s Vologda region, as during attacks in recent months following the redeployment of aircraft to the north of the country. The missile’s accuracy is estimated at 6 meters. This may unfortunately result in significant collateral damage. On May 8, 2024, it was observed for the first time that Russia was modifying some missiles by adding a second warhead, increasing their payload to 800 kg, presumably at the expense of range. The UK Ministry of Defence estimates that the modification has halved the Kh-101’s operational range to approximately 2,000 km. In practice, this means that the missile can strike any location in Ukraine without requiring Russian bombers to leave Russian airspace.

Earlier, missiles of this type had been fitted with dispensers for anti-missile flares, which would have to be linked to an appropriate sensor, such as a radar warning receiver. Another possibility is an automated flare-dispensing system programmed to release them at predetermined intervals along the planned flight route in areas where enemy air defenses are expected. The first missiles modified in this way began to be used in early 2023 and were reportedly designated Izdeliye 504AP.
