Russia Sets New Record for Number of Drones Used in Attack on Ukraine

Russia carried out the largest air and missile attack on Ukraine since the beginning of the war, launching 818 munitions overnight, mostly drones, across the eastern and central regions of the country.

On Sunday, September 7, 2025, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced on social media that since 5:00 p.m. the previous day, Russian forces had launched 818 munitions, mainly at targets in the eastern and central parts of the country, most of which were shot down. For the first time, a government building in Kyiv was damaged.

Photos: State Emergency Service of Ukraine

The Russians launched:

  • 805 Geran/Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicles and drone decoys of various types (including Gerbera) from the directions of Kursk, Bryansk, Millerovo, Oryol, Shatalovo, Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Russia, and Hvardiiske and Chauda in occupied Crimea;
  • 9 Iskander-K cruise missiles from Kursk Oblast;
  • 4 Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles from occupied Crimea.

The attack was repelled by the Air Force, air defense missile troops, electronic warfare (EW) units, unmanned systems, and mobile air defense groups of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to preliminary data, as of 8:30 a.m. today, 751 aerial targets had been shot down or forced to crash, including 747 drones and 4 Iskander-K cruise missiles.

In 37 locations, the impact of 9 ballistic missiles and 56 drones was recorded, while in 8 locations drone debris fell.

The attacks targeted twenty cities, including Kyiv, Kremenchuk, Sumy, Kryvyi Rih, Konotop, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, and Chornomorsk.

In the first seven days of September, Russia used nearly 2,000 drones against Ukraine; by comparison, in August more than 4,100 drones were recorded. These figures confirm the escalation of actions directed at infrastructure and the civilian population.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that residential buildings in Kyiv had been destroyed. In one of them, the floors between the 4th and 8th collapsed. So far, two people, including one child, have been killed.

In the capital alone, dozens of people have been injured. The Cabinet of Ministers building was damaged – a fire broke out on the upper floors. In Zaporizhzhia, more than 20 houses and a kindergarten were damaged. In Kryvyi Rih, warehouses were destroyed; one person was killed in Safonivka in Sumy Oblast, and another in Chernihiv Oblast. In Odesa, a residential high-rise was hit. Many regions have suffered over the past 24 hours. Our rescue services are working wherever they are needed,” the Ukrainian president wrote on social media.

On the Monitorwar channel on Telegram, as always, a map of the attacks was published:

And here it is worth looking at it not only because of the scale of the attack on Ukraine, but in the context of yesterday’s reports from Poland about a smuggling drone crashing near the village of Majdan-Sielec in Lublin Voivodeship – according to preliminary information from the Polish Military Police. Photos appeared in the media showing the wreckage of an unmanned aerial vehicle that essentially looks like a Gerbera combat drone decoy, used by the Russians during attacks involving Gerans. On the map, one cannot fail to notice yet another violation of Polish airspace (Poland: Unknown object exploded in Osiny, Lublin Voivodeship).
