On Thursday, January 15, 2025, Zakłady Metalowe Dezamet, part of the Polish Armaments Group (PGZ), announced the signing of an annex to a contract with the Armament Agency of the Ministry of National Defence for the delivery of an additional batch of 120 mm RAK-HE-1 (High-Explosive) fragmentation ammunition, with a range of over 10 km, for M120K Rak self-propelled mortars.
As stated in the manufacturer’s brief press release, the signing of the annex confirms the continuation of cooperation and responds to growing demand for the supply of modern munitions. Implementation of the expanded scope of the contract will be carried out in accordance with the agreed schedule and applicable quality requirements.
It should be recalled that on December 20, 2024, the Armament Agency signed a contract with Zakłady Metalowe Dezamet for the delivery, in 2026–2027, of several tens of thousands of 120 mm mortar rounds for M120K Rak self-propelled mortars. At the same time, more than one million rounds of 12.7 mm ammunition were contracted from Mesko. The combined gross value of these contracts amounts to approximately 90 million PLN (editor’s note).
An earlier order for RAK-HE-1 ammunition was placed on October 11, 2023, in the form of an annex to the base contract of April 29, 2021, which covered the procurement of more than 23,000 rounds in 2022–2024 for approximately 256.3 million PLN gross. This was the first contract for this type of ammunition. Its qualification testing was completed in June 2020.
RAK-HE-1 ammunition was developed by Zakłady Metalowe Dezamet and the Military Institute of Armament Technology (WITU) under a contract signed with the then Armament Inspectorate of the Ministry of National Defence in October 2012. An ammunition system was developed comprising the following types: high-explosive fragmentation (HE) in two variants, one filled with TNT produced by Mesko and another with the insensitive K-43 explosive mixture produced by Zakłady Chemiczne Nitro-Chem, as well as smoke (SMK) and illumination (ILL) rounds. In addition, the contract provided for the development of training, cutaway training, and practice cartridges.
Deliveries of M120K Rak self-propelled mortars to the Polish Armed Forces under the third and final contract were completed on November 29, 2024. A total of 120 mortars were delivered to operational units together with support vehicles: artillery command vehicles (AWD), artillery ammunition vehicles (AWA), and artillery weapon repair vehicles (AWRU), forming fifteen Rak Company Fire Modules (KMO), as well as four additional mortars for the Rocket Forces and Artillery Training Center in Toruń. These systems were ordered on April 28, 2016, October 11, 2019, and May 22, 2020. One KMO with eight mortars was transferred to Ukraine; as a result, 14 KMOs with 112 mortars remain in frontline service (editor’s note).
