Poland’s F-16 Jastrząb to Undergo Modernization

On August 13, 2025, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz approved an intergovernmental agreement for the modernization of 48 Lockheed Martin F-16C/D Jastrząb multirole fighter aircraft to the F-16V standard.

The formal ceremony, held as part of the Polish Armed Forces Day celebrations on August 15, took place at Wojskowe Zakłady Lotnicze Nr. 2 (Military Aviation Works No. 2) in Bydgoszcz. The location was not chosen by accident, as the main burden of the work will fall on the employees of this facility, which has specialized for many years in the maintenance and modernization of aircraft operated by the Air Force. At the same time, it is a clear signal from the authorities, demonstrating their intention to maximize the potential of the domestic defense industry.

The contract for the modernization of the F-16 Jastrząb is valued at 3.8 billion USD net. Most of the funds will go to Military Aviation Works No. 2 S.A. in Bydgoszcz, where the modernization work will be carried out / Photo: Ministry of National Defence

As announced during the event, the contract is worth 3.8 billion USD net and is to be completed by the end of 2038. The main contractor is Lockheed Martin, but most of the work will be carried out in Poland, specifically at facilities in Bydgoszcz (airframe) and in Warsaw (engines). The first aircraft will be sent for modernization in 2028; as stated by the Minister of National Defence, after the rebuild is completed, they will be relocated to the United States (most likely Edwards Air Force Base in California), where they will undergo testing and certification. Their stay outside Poland is expected to last until 2029.

Funding for the program comes from a U.S. line of credit, the launch of which was approved in July of this year. It has a total value of 4 billion USD and is part of the FMF program.

Over the years, Poland’s Jastrząb aircraft have carried out numerous flights beyond the country’s borders, including over the Middle East / Photo: USAF

While the Ministry of National Defence has not provided details on the configuration, information from the U.S. Department of State confirms that Poland’s F-16V aircraft are to receive AN/APG-83 SABR radar stations, a new central mission computer, an IFF system, enhanced communications and data exchange systems, and a new ejection seat. The project also includes the replacement of the electronic warfare system; however, the Ministry has not disclosed specifics. It is also highly likely that the aircraft will be integrated with new types of external weapons, including GBU-39 SDB lightweight bombs and (possibly) AGM-88G AARGM-ER anti-radiation missiles or anti-ship missiles, which are expected to be procured in the near future. In addition, the agreement covers the delivery of simulators as well as technical support from the U.S. side (contract for AGM-88G AARGM-ER anti-radiation missiles for Poland).

It is also known that the Ministry of National Defense has selected the new AN/ALQ-254V(1) Viper Shield electronic warfare system to be supplied by the U.S. company L3Harris Technologies.

The Lockheed Martin F-16C/D Jastrząb aircraft entered service with the Polish Air Force between 2006 and 2009. They are currently the primary type of combat aircraft responsible for securing the country’s airspace. Additionally, they play an important role within NATO structures, participating in numerous missions outside Poland (including NATO Baltic Air Policing and Icelandic Air Policing), supporting the Slovak Republic in securing its airspace, and having taken part in a combat mission over Iraq (limited to reconnaissance operations).

Tests of the first two F-16V aircraft are to be carried out in the United States. For the remaining ones, the entire procedure is to take place in Poland / Photo: USAF

Currently, they are complemented by a small number of MiG-29M fighter aircraft stationed in Malbork and KAI FA-50GF Fighting Eagle light combat aircraft, which are soon to receive guided air-to-air weaponry. In addition, next year is set to mark the start of deliveries of the Lockheed Martin F-35A Husarz, which will allow for the rearmament of two tactical aviation squadrons with 5th-generation aircraft (Polish FA-50s Relocated from Krzesiny to Mińsk Mazowiecki).
