The fire was reported by the Słajszewo Volunteer Fire Department (OSP), and firefighting crews from the volunteer fire departments in Sasino, Choczewo, and Kopalino, as well as the State Fire Service unit in Wejherowo, also took part in extinguishing it. The units were dispatched on April 12 at 10:52 p.m.

“Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found a fully developed fire involving five construction machines, all of which were completely engulfed in flames. The responders’ actions focused on securing the area and deploying firefighting streams to bring the blaze under control and extinguish it,” the Słajszewo Volunteer Fire Department reported.
According to local media reports (Choczewo24.info), the fire involved an asphalt paver, an excavator, a loader, and two rollers – equipment being used to renovate the access road to the future Lubiatowo-Kopalino Nuclear Power Plant site, a project of Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe (a State Treasury-owned company overseeing development of nuclear power in Poland – translator’s note) . The incident occurred about 1,000 meters from the boundary of the planned investment site.
The police and the prosecutor’s office are investigating the case and have not ruled out arson involving third parties, including deliberate sabotage. The losses are substantial – the machines alone were worth hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of PLN.
In an official statement, Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe confirmed that the fire involved equipment belonging to a company carrying out road renovation work in cooperation with the Choczewo municipality and that it did not occur directly on the company’s investment site:
“On the night of April 12–13, a fire broke out involving equipment belonging to one of the companies carrying out the renovation of Morska Street in Słajszewo. The incident took place on the road being renovated in cooperation with the Choczewo municipality, from the village of Słajszewo to the boundary of the investment site, at a distance of approximately 1 km from the area reserved for our project. Immediately after noticing the fire, a security employee called the fire brigade and police to the scene. The fire was extinguished, and the police began investigative activities in the case.
The police and the notified state services are clarifying the situation. The proceedings are intended to establish all the circumstances and causes of the incident. Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe declares its full cooperation with all services investigating the situation. Until the activities conducted by the competent authorities are completed, the company will not comment on the causes of the incident.
Efforts are also underway to restore work on Morska Street as quickly as possible. We are aware of the importance of the renovated road’s accessibility for the local community of the Choczewo municipality and the village of Słajszewo, which is why we are doing everything we can to limit any risk of delays caused by the situation.”

Importantly, this was not the first incident of this kind. The day before, the Słajszewo Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to extinguish a portable toilet and a nearby cable reel located at the same construction site.
