New FN SCAR for the civilian market
The civilian FN SCAR lineup – models 16S, 17S, and 20S – has undergone a major modernization, reportedly introducing more than 25 changes. The manufacturer must have taken a close look at nearly two decades’ worth of user feedback, as the updates are intended to address some of the most significant “pain points” of what has by now become a classic design.

What changes have been introduced?
The entire moving assembly has been significantly redesigned – the bolt carrier is now divided into two components. The main body houses a new hydraulic buffer. The charging handle remains on the forward section of the bolt carrier, which is now a separate, removable element. Importantly, the charging handle does not reciprocate during the operation of the bolt carrier (non-reciprocating charging handle). The complete assembly can also be installed in previous-generation SCAR rifles.

These changes are intended to result in markedly improved weapon “feel” during firing, with significantly reduced perceived recoil and diminished shock and vibration.
The receiver has also undergone more substantial modification. It has been noticeably extended and now covers the gas block, while still leaving two access windows for operating the gas regulator. It is mated to a new aluminum handguard with M-LOK slots, which not only improves ergonomics and configuration flexibility, but also enhances barrel cooling.
The stock retains the SCAR’s distinctive design, often referred to by Americans as the “ugg boot stock.” It now features QD sling attachment points and a modified cheek rest, which is intended to be significantly more comfortable for left-handed shooters.

This is not the end of the ergonomic changes. The new SCAR rifles are fully compatible with AR-15–standard pistol grips, allowing users to choose from a wide range of aftermarket options. The controls have also been modified and are easier to operate thanks to slightly revised geometry. An important addition is a right-side bolt release.
Improved trigger mechanisms have been introduced in the new-generation rifles. The 16S and 17S models feature a single-stage trigger with significantly improved characteristics, while the designated marksman–oriented 20S stands out with a two-stage trigger.
The new commercial rifle line is intended to combine many solutions developed by FN America for military customers over the past several years. For civilian shooters, those solutions considered most appropriate for this market segment were selected. Despite the fairly extensive modernization, the price is not expected to differ significantly from that of the previous generation.
