KC-767A reaches 50,000 flight hours, marking milestone for Italian strategic airlift

The KC-767A fleet operated by the Italian Air Force’s 14th Wing surpassed 50,000 flight hours on July 20, 2026, confirming its position as one of the most valuable and versatile strategic assets in Italian military aviation. The Italian Air Force announced the milestone in a statement issued on August 11. The achievement is not merely a statistical record, but above all a testament to the fleet’s high operational readiness, reliability, and continuous evolution.

For years, the KC-767A has formed a cornerstone of Italy’s power-projection capability, both in national operations and within NATO. Its ability to conduct aerial refueling, strategic airlift, and aeromedical evacuation missions makes it a key asset for operations with global reach.

In recent years, the KC-767A has demonstrated its flexibility in a wide range of missions:

Support for NATO operations – regular aerial refueling and transport missions conducted within the Alliance.
Air Kuwait Task Force – participation in stabilization operations in the Middle East.
Indo-Pacific Jump 2024 – a long-range deployment highlighting the global reach of Italy’s air mobility capabilities.
Evacuations from the Middle East – repatriation of citizens amid a worsening regional crisis.
Humanitarian assistance following the earthquake in Venezuela – transport of personnel, equipment, and aid for the affected population.

Each of these missions has demonstrated that the KC-767A is capable of operating under widely differing conditions, ranging from military operations to strictly humanitarian missions. One of the most important elements in the system’s evolution has been the introduction of the MEDEVAC configuration, which significantly expands the fleet’s aeromedical capabilities. Certified D1–D4 medical modules allow for:

transport of up to 10 stretcher patients,
operation by specialized medical personnel,
provision of intensive care during flight.

This makes the KC-767A one of Europe’s most advanced aeromedical evacuation aircraft, strengthening Italy’s ability to respond to humanitarian crises and natural disasters.

It is now known that the KC-767As will be replaced by European Airbus A330 MRTT aircraft. A contract for six aircraft was signed on April 16 this year. In this case, Italy opted to use second-hand airframes sourced from the civilian market. The procurement, which also includes conversion work and a training and logistics package, cost the Italian Ministry of Defence 1.4 billion EUR. Deliveries of the entire package are to be completed within 122 months of contract signature, although this provision does not specify individual delivery dates.
