The training process for the group, previously selected by the Indonesian Air Force, lasted four months and was conducted at the French operational conversion unit stationed in Saint-Dizier. The pilots completed both theoretical and practical training, which included simulator instruction and flights on Dassault Rafale aircraft operated by the French Air and Space Force. The training of pilots and ground support personnel is included in Indonesia’s program to procure 42 Dassault Rafale aircraft. It is not ruled out that this number will increase, as the authorities have publicly declared their intention to purchase an additional 24 aircraft.

According to the schedule, the first Dassault Rafale aircraft are to be delivered to Indonesia at the beginning of next year. To date, the manufacturer has completed the assembly of (at least) two two-seat variants. The purchase of 42 aircraft has been divided into three separate phases – the first, in 2022, covered eight aircraft.
Within the Indonesian Air Force, the Dassault Rafale is intended to initiate a process of equipment modernization and to replace obsolete combat aircraft types. These include the Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon and the Sukhoi Su-27/30.
Currently, the Indonesian government is pursuing a policy of maximum diversification of suppliers. In addition to the Dassault Rafale, an order has been placed for 48 TAI Kaan aircraft, and the acquisition of up to 48 KAI KF-21 Boramae fighters has also been declared. Moreover, press sources indicate that the authorities are interested in purchasing Chinese Chengdu J-10CE aircraft. At the same time, there is still no final decision regarding the conclusion of an intergovernmental agreement with the United States, which is to cover between 24 and 36 Boeing F-15IDN Eagle II fighters.
