Is AKU Taking a New Direction?
AKU is an Italian manufacturer of professional footwear with many years of experience. With roots in mountaineering footwear, it gained a strong position in the military boot market thanks to the Pilgrim line – lightweight boots designed for dynamic tasks. However, the manufacturer is not resting on its laurels and continues to expand its offering in response to market demand.
A new line first presented in 2025 is Sentinel. The models featured a more classic design, an upper made of quick-drying microfiber, and were available in three shaft heights. The novelty for 2026 is the further development of this line. Sentinel LTR models with a leather upper are being introduced, offered in both high and mid (MID) versions.

AKU Sentinel LTR and Sentinel SD
The new models in the Sentinel line are more classic military boots, which give the impression of high-quality footwear. Notable is a construction with fewer seams than some competing models. Most of the foot is covered by what is essentially a single piece of leather, which suggests the material should work well with the foot and adapt to it with continued use. From my own experience, this type of construction offers the greatest durability and comfort.
Sentinel LTR is made from black full-grain leather, while the Sentinel SD features sand-colored suede. Both models are additionally equipped with a Gore-Tex More Seasons membrane. In some parts of the upper, AIR8000 fabric, known from the Pilgrim line, has also been used.
Key Features of the New AKU Models
Key features of the Sentinel LTR and Sentinel SD models include:
- Vibram Adapta outsole,
- dual-density PU midsole,
- a 3/4-length shank and textile puncture protection (Sentinel LTR),
- a 4–6 mm nylon layer between the upper and the midsole (Sentinel SD),
- medium outsole stiffness,
- a breathable insole,
- SANIFIT antibacterial technology (Sentinel SD),
- ankle protection,
- a quick-lacing system with a stopper,
- a lace pocket.
