Such a solution is intended to expand Diehl Defence’s potential customer base. Integrating the ammunition with Mk 45 Mod 4 naval guns could open both the domestic market, where BAE Systems is competing for a contract to supply the artillery systems for Germany’s MEKO A-200DEU frigates, and export opportunities.

It is worth noting that the Mk 45 Mod 4 naval gun systems manufactured by BAE Systems are among the most widely used solutions of their type in the Western world. They are operated aboard numerous frigates and destroyers in service with NATO countries and key US allies. The manufacturer is also securing new orders, including from Australia, the United Kingdom, Türkiye, and Canada.

Diehl Defence is developing its own family of 127 mm ammunition for the naval market. According to the company, the ammunition offers high accuracy and extended range. Integration with the Mk 45 gun system will require verification of compatibility with the loading and fire-control systems. The ballistic data for the new ammunition will also have to be incorporated into the system software.
