On Friday, January 30, 2026, the Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (Forsvarsministeriets Materiel- og Indkøbsstyrelse; FMI) of the Danish Ministry of Defence signed a seven-year framework agreement worth hundreds of millions of euros with the German group Rheinmetall AG for the supply of ammunition in the 30 mm, 35 mm, 120 mm, and 155 mm calibers.
According to FMI, ammunition is a crucial component of the Armed Forces’ combat power, and the contract will help meet operational requirements across the various capabilities the Armed Forces will field in the coming years.
The first implementing order in the medium-caliber ammunition segment covers various types of 30×173 mm and 35×228 mm rounds. The total number of rounds ordered is in the five-digit range, with the contract value in the hundreds of millions of euros. The former will be used by the Oerlikon Skyranger 30 air defense system, while the latter will arm CV9035DK MkIIIC infantry fighting vehicles.
In the area of 120×570 mm tank ammunition, Rheinmetall will deliver more than 1,000 armor-piercing fin-stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS) rounds. The value of this order amounts to several million euros. The ammunition will equip Leopard 2A7DK main battle tanks.
Artillery ammunition, which will be ordered at a later stage, will be used by ATMOS 2000 (Autonomous Truck Mounted Howitzer) self-propelled howitzers.
“Ammunition is absolutely crucial for many of the Armed Forces’ operational capabilities. That is why it is also gratifying that we have entered into this contract with Rheinmetall. At FMI, it is our task to deliver on the operational needs of the Armed Forces, and we achieve this, among other things, by procuring ammunition for these capabilities,” said Colonel Thomas Øgendahl Knudsen, Head of the Land Division at FMI.
“We are grateful for the trust Denmark has placed in us for its ammunition supply,” said Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG. “Rheinmetall sees this as confirmation of its role as one of the world’s leading ammunition manufacturers.”
Thanks to the new contract for modern ammunition, both training and combat rounds are being procured.
The agreement was concluded during a ceremony at the Embassy of Denmark in Berlin, attended, among others, by Denmark’s defense attaché to Germany, Brigadier General Ulrich Essemann-Bech.
