The ultimate sniper rifle?
It is virtually impossible to write about the CheyTac brand without immediately referencing a particular design, one created in close alignment with the very purpose of the brand’s existence and with all the efforts undertaken since the early 2000s.
A long barrel capped with a massive muzzle brake. A distinctive fore-end with a bipod and a carry handle. A skeletal, telescopic stock. And crowning it all, like the cherry on top, a large riflescope reaching far beyond the limits of the human eye. This is the image that forms in the minds of firearms enthusiasts when they hear the words “CheyTac,” “Intervention,” and “M200.”

The M200 Intervention is a niche yet iconic design from the very early 2000s, created as a tool for precision engagement of targets at extreme long range. It was developed specifically for the then-new and revolutionary .408 CheyTac cartridge and is closely associated with the early achievements of the CheyTac brand.

The CheyTac M200 Intervention is an iconic rifle
From a firearms enthusiast’s perspective, the M200 is an intriguing design not only in technical terms, but also in terms of its image and reputation.
The rifle was designed for shooting at distances far beyond the capabilities of “average” shooters, serving as a tool for a narrow group of professionals. Its application is so niche that photographs of it in use by uniformed services are very difficult to find. According to available sources, CheyTac M200 rifles have also been used by Polish units, including GROM Military Unit. On the one hand, it is a widely recognizable design; on the other, it is very rarely seen. Unfortunately, though understandably, elite units employing such equipment are rarely eager to pose for photo sessions while on duty… which is a shame.

The Intervention belongs to a group of distinctive early-2000s designs whose shapes many of us admired in movies and video games. On the big screen, the M200 gained its greatest fame thanks to the film Shooter (2007), directed by Antoine Fuqua, with Mark Wahlberg in the leading role.
For me, as the author, a young shooting enthusiast who grew up during the golden era of Call of Duty, it is almost a duty to mention the rifle’s key role in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, where it stood out not only in the storyline but also, and perhaps above all, in multiplayer mode. Not every Call of Duty player is a passionate firearms enthusiast, but it is safe to say that few would confuse the silhouette of a CheyTac with anything else. Appearing in the game under the simple name “Intervention,” this rifle became a kind of symbol that was later carried over, more or less modified, into four subsequent titles in the series.
As Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is not in my Steam library, I was able to admire the M200 in Arma 3, which has recently been making my free time particularly enjoyable. / Photo: Author
Where did it all begin? A brief history of the .408 CheyTac
At the very beginning of the 2000s, a group of highly educated specialists identified a clear need: the need to create an ideal long-range sniper cartridge. At the time, only .50 BMG ammunition was readily available, which, despite its power, was not necessarily optimal for typical sniper applications. There were, of course, cartridges more powerful than the standard 7.62×51 mm NATO, but they were still insufficient for the intended role. The specialists organized themselves into a group determined to find an intermediate solution designed strictly with precision in mind. Led by John D. Taylor, the group soon formally became CheyTac Associates.
Anyone with even brief or “surface-level” exposure to the subject of ballistics, whether internal or terminal, knows that caliber alone is not everything. It is an entire world of chemistry, metallurgy, and physics. The creators of the new cartridge had to take into account an extraordinarily large number of factors that directly influence projectile behavior in flight. Even vast knowledge and experience are sometimes not enough, so specialized software, PRODAS (Projectile Rocket Ordnance Design and Analysis Software), was used to support the work. Clearly, this was not a purely theoretical exercise, but a full-scale effort with a clearly defined objective – one that was ultimately achieved.
With the help of PRODAS, Warren Jensen, a partner and designer at Lost River Ballistic Technologies, designed projectiles of various calibers characterized by exceptional stability throughout their entire flight at extreme long ranges. The complete solution was patented under the name Balanced Flight. The projectiles remain fully stable after passing through the transonic zone and stay on their original flight trajectory. The result of this work was the .408 CheyTac cartridge – ammunition that, at the time of its introduction, represented a true revolution.
“Gyroscopic stability remains constant, causing the projectile to maintain its original flight path.”

The achievements of the CheyTac team are best illustrated by excerpts from the official CheyTac Long Range Rifle System documentation:
The CheyTac® Cartridge was developed to fill the gap between the 338 Lapua and the .50 BMG, yet the downrange characteristics outperform the best .50 BMG projectiles. The projectiles are manufactured by Lost River Ballistic Technologies™ and are designed using PRODAS software. The projectiles are CNC, lathe turned, projectiles of a copper/nickel alloy. The 419grain projectile has a supersonic range of 2200 yards+ at standard air conditions. A second projectile is available – the 305grain projectile is designed for a high velocity near range application. The average ballistic co-efficient of the 419 projectile is .945 over 3500 meters.
The complete cartridge has a weight of 60 g and a length of 113 mm. / Photo: CheyTac USA
The CheyTac® LRRS is a solid anti-personnel system to 2000 yards. The primary intent of the .408 is as an extreme range anti-personnel system. Groups of 7” – 9” at 1000 yards, 10” at 1500 yards and 15” at 2000 yards have been consistently obtained. Groups of 19” at 2100 yards and 29 “ at 2400 yards have also been obtained. All groups that are up to 3000 yards are less than 1 minute of angle for vertical dispersion.

In testing at the Idaho test range, an observer at the target could not see the sniper (with no additional camouflage) in the open on the desert floor when shooting at 2000 yards. With the suppressor
in place, the sniper (with no additional camouflage such as a ghillie suit) could not be seen under direct observation with binoculars.
The CNC turned projectiles are made from a hard copper/nickel alloy that has very good penetration properties. It can penetrate Level IIIA armor at 2000 yards or more. The projectile can also penetrate a cinder block wall at 500 yards and greater. It will penetrate 1” cold rolled steel at 200 yds, and .5” cold rolled at 850 yds.
Where did the M200 Intervention come from?
We already know that the M200 Intervention is an iconic weapon. We also know what distinguishes the ammunition it is chambered for. It is therefore time to take a closer look at the rifle itself and its characteristics.
The M200 Intervention is, to put it colloquially, a big gun. And this statement is by no means an exaggeration. With an overall length of 1,422 mm, it weighs nearly 14 kg, and that is without optics.
Ammunition with extraordinary performance is one thing, but a weapon capable of launching it is equally necessary. Classic platforms such as the Remington 700 are clearly unsuitable given the cartridge’s sheer size. Fortunately, the United States has never lacked, and in fact still does not lack, dedicated long-range shooting enthusiasts who possess not only the passion and ambition, but also the capabilities and resources. On the sparsely populated deserts and plains of the U.S., which provide ideal conditions for this type of shooting, many large-scale firearm designs were born, along with even more types of ammunition – all with one goal: to reach farther.
One of the companies operating in this highly specialized niche was EDM Arms, whose product lineup included, among others, large-caliber rifles from the Windrunner series.

CheyTac considered the Windrunner platform to be suitable and commissioned EDM Arms to design a rifle based on this system, chambered for its new ammunition. This is how the M200 Intervention was born. In 2017, news circulated worldwide claiming that a sniper from the Special Air Service (SAS) had successfully neutralized a target with a single shot from a distance of approximately 2.4 km using this rifle.

What happened to CheyTac?
The combat use of CheyTac M200 Intervention rifles has been confirmed. The entire concept, from the ammunition, through the rifle itself, to a comprehensive sniper system, represents an important, though somewhat forgotten, chapter in the history of precision weapons.
So how did the brand’s story continue? This is a difficult topic to describe. Little is known about weapons sales to institutional customers, as such acquisitions are often classified. There is also limited publicly available information about the brand’s activities over the subsequent years. However, by consulting relevant U.S. government sources, it is possible to learn that the CheyTac USA brand underwent changes in ownership and headquarters over time.
Is CheyTac therefore still an operating brand? Yes. Since 2020, CheyTac USA has been owned by Campbell Arms Manufacturing, with a new headquarters located in the state of Tennessee.
CheyTac USA reemerges with a broad portfolio of precision firearms
There is a great deal of history behind the CheyTac USA brand. What can we expect from it today?
M200 Intervention still in the lineup
The iconic CheyTac M200 Intervention remains part of CheyTac USA’s current product offering. What’s more, the design continues to be developed. The latest 2025 models feature a redesigned bipod with simpler, more user-friendly operation. The rifle is also now equipped with the more comfortable B5 Systems P-Grip 23 pistol grip.

M300 Praetorian – a lighter alternative with no compromise in power
Today’s CheyTac USA is not limited to the M200 Intervention alone. The lineup also includes the M300 Praetorian, a rifle chambered for the same .408 CT or .375 CT ammunition, but featuring a significantly lower weight of approximately 9 kg without a magazine. The CheyTac USA Magnum Action system, paired with a longitudinally fluted barrel, is mounted in a composite stock manufactured by McMillan.
Paladin – the most popular long-range long-action calibers
The CheyTac USA Paladin rifle is a more classic long-action design, offered in the most popular calibers in the world of long-range shooting (including .300 Win Mag and 7 PRC). The Paladin serves as a platform that can be customized by the manufacturer to meet the individual shooter’s requirements. Using the order configurator, customers can choose, for example, the barrel (stainless steel or carbon-fiber wrapped) in various lengths, the stock (**MDT XRS or MDT ACC ELITE), and the Cerakote finish.
SAPP – Short Action Precision Platform
The final precision rifle in the CheyTac USA lineup is the SAPP (Short Action Precision Platform). It is based on a short-action system and chambered for .308 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, .243 Win, .25 Creedmoor, 6 Dasher, and 6 Creedmoor. Like the Paladin, the rifle can be manufactured to individual requirements, with configurations differing in caliber, barrel type and length, and stock options.
In summary, at present CheyTac USA offers a broad portfolio of bolt-action precision rifles covering nearly all major caliber classes, from the original .408 CT and .375 CT, through substantial long-action systems, to classic short-action platforms.
CheyTac USA’s new lineup also includes AR-15 and AR-10 platforms
Precision rifles in nearly every “size” are not all that CheyTac USA has to offer. The company’s portfolio also includes AR-15 and AR-10 platforms, marketed as the CT-15 and CT-10. These rifles and carbines are distinguished by their distinctive styling and a high degree of configuration options, particularly in terms of barrel length and finish.
