On Thursday, July 24, 2025, German company Hensoldt announced that it had received an order worth over 340 million EUR to supply additional TRML-4D multifunctional radar stations to Ukraine as part of the IRIS-T SLM air defense systems, as well as, for the first time, SPEXER 2000 3D MkIII radars, which are components of the Oerlikon Skyranger 30 air defense system.

“Our high-performance radars are urgently needed by Ukrainian air defence,” said HENSOLDT CEO Oliver Dörre. “A number of radars have been protecting Ukraine since the start of Russia’s war of aggression. We are proud to be supplying further systems. The radars are extremely important for protecting citizens.”
The TRML-4D is based on the latest AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar technology. It provides rapid detection and tracking of approximately 1,500 targets within a range of up to 250 km. The system is capable of quickly and reliably detecting, tracking, and classifying all types of aerial threats, including cruise missiles, drones, aircraft, and helicopters.
The SPEXER radar family offers surveillance radars with various ranges, designed for the automatic detection and classification of ground, maritime, and low-flying aerial targets. The SPEXER 2000 is part of Rheinmetall AG’s new Oerlikon Skyranger 30 gun-missile air defense system. It is also used in the German Feldlager (ASUL) counter-UAS system, in qualified air defense applications, and the HoWiSM naval high-energy laser weapon system.
Hensoldt has extensive experience in developing radar systems for air defense and actively supports the advancement of key technologies in this field. In addition to the TRML-4D and SPEXER, the company’s portfolio includes the Twinvis passive radar and radars for securing the movement of naval vessels and aircraft. Both the TRML-4D and SPEXER radars are integrated into the NNbS (Nah-und Nächstbereichsschutzsystem), a short-range air defense system ordered by the German Armed Forces. Hensoldt also supplies radars for the new frigates and corvettes of the German Navy, as well as for airspace surveillance and approach control at military airfields, and for various other applications.
To date, Hensoldt has delivered 16 TRML-4D radars, one of which was destroyed by Russian forces on June 7, 2023, along with eight IRIS-T SLM systems. According to information released in May this year, Germany plans to deliver four new IRIS-T SLM systems to Ukraine, along with missiles, at a total value of EUR 2.2 billion.
The order for SPEXER radars for Ukraine may indicate that the country is soon to receive either the Oerlikon Skyranger 30 or the Feldlager (ASUL) system.
