Grand Power P24 – competitor from Slovakia

The Slovak company Grand Power presents new semi-automatic pistols – the compact P24 and the sport pistol LP24. Utilizing a modified Browning system, they are equipped with ambidextrous manipulators, a red dot sight mount, and magazine well compatible with Glock 17 standard magazines.

Following trends

The manufacturer from Slovakia presented a new line of semi-automatic pistols during the IWA OutdoorClassics 2024 fair (but those weren’t Grand Power’s only new products).

They represent a significant departure from the K100 series and its derivatives, which utilize barrel rotation locking. They employ a modified Browning operating principle, based on short recoil of the barrel with its tilting and locking in the ejection port. This system is considered a standard today and is the most widely used solution. Additionally, both the P24 and the LP24 are characterized by a smaller width compared to the derivatives of the K100 series. This can be seen as optimizing dimensions for more comfortable concealed carry. Analyzing the latest innovations from manufacturers worldwide, there is a noticeable emphasis on slimming down handguns.

Two models were presented, both chambered for 9mm x 19 Parabellum ammunition – the standard P24 and the sport LP24, differing only in the longer slide assembly and adjustable sights.

Barrel

The barrel length depends on the model – in the P24, a 93 mm long barrel is used (a version with external threading is also expected), while in the LP24, the barrel is 120 mm long, covered by a longer slide. A low lying barrel axis theoretically should result in better recoil control.

Sights

For the P24, the iron sights consist of a front post and a rear notch with 3-Dot points, while the LP24 features an adjustable rear notch with a fiber optic front post. As per modern standards, there is a red dot sight mount on the slide, which can be attached using base plates (four of which are included in the set). At the time of release, the plates will be compatible with red dot sights:

  • Vortex,
  • Shield,
  • Meopta,
  • Trijicon,
  • C-More RTS.
Additions

Additional features of the slide include chamber load indicator, a firing pin status indicator, and the safety. Deep cutouts are placed at both the rear and front of the slide.

Frame Assembly

Magazine

The polymer frame is adapted for 17-round magazines of the Glock 17 pistol (two magazines are included with the pistol).

Grip and Ergonomics

The pistols were presented with anti-slip tape on the grip. Its size can be adjusted using backstraps in three sizes – small, medium, and large (shown in the respective images).

Slide stop levers are present on both sides of the frame, while the magazine release can be switched to the left side. A higher undercut was applied beneath the pronounced beavertail, which should allow for a high grip. Just in front of the takedown lever, there is a thumb rest. The frame traditionally ends with a section of the Picatinny rail.

Trigger mechanism

The trigger mechanism with a straight trigger and safety device has a pull weight of approx. 1.6 kg.

The P24 model’s unusual proportions are immediately noticeable. In comparison to the slide, the grip appears too long for a compact pistol. This is confirmed when comparing its dimensions to pistols such as the Glock 17 Gen5 or the Springfield Echelon. A similar approach was used in its design as in the Glock 45, where the compact slide of the model 19 was combined with the full-size grip of the model 17. The fusion of a lighter slide with a grip providing full support theoretically may have a positive impact on weapon control, although it should be noted that this may depend on the shooter.

The pistols are expected to arrive in Poland in the fourth quarter of this year, with a price of approximately 3,000 PLN. More information is available on the official Grand Power website.
