On the night of Monday to Tuesday, October 6–7, Ukrainian drones attacked the Antipinsky Oil Refinery in Tyumen, located beyond the Ural Mountains in the Asian part of Russia. It was a record-breaking strike in terms of distance from Ukrainian territory, exceeding 2,000 kilometers (about 1,240 miles), and, interestingly, it took place on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s 73rd birthday.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported at the time that 209 Ukrainian drones had been shot down, 184 of them between 11:00 p.m. Monday and 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, including: 62 over Kursk Oblast, 31 over Belgorod Oblast, 30 over Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, 18 over Voronezh Oblast, 13 over the Black Sea, 6 over Lipetsk Oblast, 5 over Kaluga Oblast, 4 over Tula Oblast, 3 each over Rostov and Ryazan oblasts, 2 each over Bryansk, Oryol, and Crimea, and 2 over Moscow Oblast (including 1 heading toward Moscow), as well as 1 over Volgograd Oblast. Later, between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m., another 25 drones were intercepted,16 over the Black Sea, 6 over Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, and 3 over Moscow Oblast. The previous day, Russian forces had reported shooting down 231 drones.
Videos and photos shared on social media showed explosions and damage at the Antipinsky Oil Refinery in Tyumen Oblast, owned by Rusinvest LLC. This marked yet another Ukrainian strike against Russia’s oil-processing infrastructure. Reports indicated that at least two drones hit the facility, damaging a distillation column and part of the water supply system. The refinery has a processing capacity of 9 million tons of crude oil annually, producing gasoline, diesel, and other petroleum products.
Interestingly, the Tyumen regional authorities, in a separate statement, claimed that three drones had been destroyed in the Antipinsky district, where the refinery is located — though this information was absent from the Defense Ministry’s statement. They also asserted that there had been no explosions, fires, injuries, or destruction, a claim contradicted by numerous materials circulating online.
Footage also appeared showing fire trucks and ambulances heading toward the area, while residents reported temporary disruptions in mobile and internet service nearby. The strike on the refinery was later confirmed by both the Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation and the Exilenova+ channel, which specializes in tracking Ukrainian drone attacks inside Russia.
For several weeks, Ukraine has been conducting sustained drone strikes on Russian oil refineries in the western part of the country, leading to a sharp decline in domestic gasoline and diesel production. As a result, many regions of Russia have experienced fuel shortages and rationing, with record-high prices. The government has suspended fuel exports at least until the end of 2025 and is reportedly considering emergency imports from China. As of September 28, 38% of Russia’s refining capacity – about 338,000 tons per day – was offline, and gasoline output had fallen by 1 million tons, leaving the domestic market with a 20% supply deficit, according to the Seala analytics platform. The scale of refinery shutdowns has become unprecedented in modern Russian history.
