On Wednesday, September 11, 2024, the German industrial group Rheinmetall AG announced the strengthening of its collaboration with the Polish-Finnish company ICEYE, which has been developing since June 13 of this year. Rheinmetall has obtained exclusive rights to offer ICEYE’s Earth surface imaging services using SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) technology in Germany and Hungary.
Under this agreement, Rheinmetall will integrate the capabilities offered by ICEYE with its next-generation battlefield systems. Additionally, Rheinmetall and ICEYE are exploring joint opportunities in several markets worldwide, including Germany and Hungary, where Rheinmetall currently holds exclusive rights to distribute ICEYE’s SAR satellite services to military and government users under this agreement.
Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG, said:
“The space domain is an integral part of a defence strategy and of great relevance to our military clients. We are convinced that our combined capabilities will enable us to develop innovative approaches to offer customized solutions for our military customers in the future.”
After the conclusion of the ILA Berlin Air Show 2024, where Rheinmetall AG presented its concepts for entering the space market, both companies signed a cooperation agreement, and Germany invested in the Polish-Finnish company through Rheinmetall Nordic. Among its various clients, ICEYE offers its services to the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. In this way, Rheinmetall AG aims to make reconnaissance data from space useful on the battlefield.
As the owner and operator of the world’s largest constellation of Earth observation satellites based on synthetic aperture radar, ICEYE provides proven solutions and data in this area. A significant portion of the Earth’s surface is always covered by clouds or shrouded in darkness. Unlike traditional Earth observation satellites, ICEYE’s small radar-imaging satellites are capable of capturing high-resolution images of the Earth’s surface regardless of conditions—both day and night, and even under heavy cloud cover. In other words, they can collect images and data from any location on Earth multiple times a day, providing essential reliability for critical decision-making processes.
ICEYE is headquartered in Finland and works with over 700 employees worldwide, with offices also located in Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
