Poland: Kraśnik breaks ground on 155 mm artillery ammunition plant

With the ceremonial placing of a time capsule at the Mesko plant in Kraśnik, a company within the Polish Armaments Group, the construction and expansion of production infrastructure for manufacturing key-calibre 155 mm artillery ammunition has begun.

On Wednesday, 29 October 2025, at the Kraśnik plant, with the participation of, among others, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, Deputy Minister of State Assets Konrad Gołota, as well as the management of the Polish Armaments Group (President Adam Leszkiewicz and Vice-Presidents Arkadiusz Bąk, Jan Grabowski, and Piotr Zawieja) and Mesko, a symbolic ceremony was held to place a time capsule and sign the foundation act, marking the start of the construction and expansion of production infrastructure for manufacturing key-calibre 155 mm artillery ammunition.

Mesko President Renata Gruszczyńska announced that the investment in Kraśnik includes the expansion and modernization of the production hall to approximately 9,000 m², the construction of new technological and storage infrastructure, the purchase of modern machinery and production lines, as well as the modernization of existing facilities and the revitalization of industrial areas. Completion of construction work and the launch of full production lines is planned for 2027, which will enable the production of up to 150,000 155 mm ammunition bodies per year. Full production capacity is expected to be reached in 2028, when approximately 180,000 155 mm ammunition bodies will be manufactured.

This will give Poland a modern artillery ammunition production center that will strengthen the capabilities of the Polish Armed Forces and increase the independence of the national defence industry.

To this end, Mesko received 887,200,000 PLN in funding from the Capital Investment Fund (FIK) of the Ministry of State Assets, which will allow for the modernization of the Kraśnik production branch and result in the aforementioned increase in the production volume of 155 mm ammunition bodies. This refers to ammunition in two configurations: with and without a gas generator. At the same time, the company will maintain the ability to produce other types of ammunition at no less than the current level.

As part of a broader plan, the Polish Armaments Group, with a total of 2.4 billion PLN in funding, intends to build three ammunition factories in Poland. Mesko’s own contribution to the construction of the Kraśnik facility includes the company’s own funds allocated, among other things, to the purchase of new properties (a total of 4.5 ha) and technological equipment

We are in Kraśnik, in a hall that measures 9,000 square meters. Behind us, as we saw, a hall of 18,000 square meters will be built. This is a major investment in Kraśnik, a major investment in security, and a major investment in the people who will find work here. Thank you very much, and I think that the applause that followed the signing of the foundation act for this factory, this place of production, by the Mesko employees is the best proof that it is you who are the most important here,” said Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.

When very good experts, true specialists, undertake investments in building the defense potential and defense industry in Poland—that is when real action begins. I want to sincerely thank you, because this was a well-chosen investment, and today’s laying of the cornerstone for the production site of the 155 mm ammunition bodies is the best evidence of that. The workers, the residents, our compatriots, the citizens of the Republic of Poland, for whom we are building this factory, for our shared security, congratulations to the entire Mesko team, to all employees. You are wonderful. I am pleased that the management, the whole company, PGZ and Mesko foresee an increase in employment, because this is also a very good signal for the local labor market. Why do we need these capabilities, and what did we find when they were expanded? It is worth recalling this. Minister Gołota and I have been responsible for building the defense industry’s potential in this process for many, many months. Together with the management, with the entire Group, we are transforming the Polish defense industry,” the Deputy Prime Minister continued.

Appropriate decisions are being made in the context of what is happening with large calibers, with heavy calibers, with the 155 standard—this is critical. (…) These are key deliveries of 155 mm ammunition. In the context of Ukraine—Poland helps and supports, because the frontier of Polish security lies on the Ukrainian-Russian front line. I think there will be an opportunity to say more about this in the European context and in light of our recent decisions. We are investing in 155. We have provided funds under the capital initiatives program. This is an idea of the Ministry of State Assets and the Ministry of National Defense. It began with MON, and MAP is the implementer. We devised a way to finance ammunition factories in Poland, because they simply did not exist. We did not have sovereignty in this area; we did not have security in this area of production. (…) At the moment of today’s meeting, workers are producing these bodies. It is very important to have full independence. (…) This is not merely our ambition, this is our absolute commitment,” emphasized the Minister of National Defense.

As the Polish Armaments Group, we are fully aware of how important this element of supplying the Polish Armed Forces is, and how important it is for our security. Step by step, we are moving toward completing this entire process. We keep this in mind, which is why we think about our technological partners, as well as financial resources, investments, infrastructure, and workforce competencies. But we have also done many things ourselves. The company used its own funds to purchase this plot of land. We are investing ourselves in order to create the possibility of taking further steps,” said Adam Leszkiewicz, President of the Management Board of the Polish Armaments Group.

The factory in Kraśnik will be a symbol of the technological sovereignty of the Polish Armaments Group – it will be the first plant in Poland to manufacture 155 mm ammunition bodies fully domestically, ‘from A to Z.’ The implementation of the project will ensure complete technological and production independence in the area of this key ammunition component—the projectile body—and will strengthen the country’s industrial potential. The strategic importance of the project enhances national security through full production independence in the field of NATO-standard 155 mm ammunition, and also ensures supply-chain resilience through production based on domestic components and resources. The construction of the ammunition plant in Kraśnik also means strengthening NATO’s eastern flank through the development of ammunition-production capabilities on Polish territory, as well as supporting regional economic growth by creating new jobs and increasing Kraśnik’s industrial potential.
