Poland: Construction of the Ratownik Rescue Ship Starts

A steel-cutting ceremony was held at PGZ Stocznia Wojenna in Gdynia for the new rescue ship for the Polish Navy, being built under the program codenamed Ratownik.

On Wednesday, 26 November 2025, at PGZ Stocznia Wojenna (PGZ Naval Shipyard), part of the Polish Armaments Group (PGZ), a ceremony was held marking the first steel cutting for the new rescue ship for the Polish Navy, built under the program codenamed Ratownik (Polish for ‘rescuer’). This event officially marks the start of the ship’s construction. The keel is scheduled to be laid in February next year, the launch is planned for 2027, and delivery to the customer is expected at the end of 2029.

The contract for the construction of the rescue ship was signed at the end of last year, on 27 December, also in Gdynia, at the premises of the Naval Academy. The exact value of the contract was not disclosed to the public at the time; Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz mentioned only that it exceeds 1 billion PLN. According to the terms of the contract, the first steel cutting was to take place within 12 months from the signing date, which means that yesterday’s ceremony took place with a one-month margin (Rescuer – third time’s the charm).

Many of the invited guests were absent from the ceremony, including the Navy Inspector, Vice Admiral Jarosław Ziemiański, who had gone to attend the meeting of the Council of Ministers related to the announcement of the selected partner for Poland’s submarine construction program.

The new design is based on the concept developed by MMC Ship Design & Marine Consulting Sp. z o.o. of Gdynia, internally designated as 887R, which was created during the earlier attempt to launch the rescue ship program. Yesterday we learned that the current design has been assigned the number 108, the next in sequence after 106, given to the frigates built under the Miecznik program, and 107, assigned to the electronic intelligence vessels being constructed under the Delfin program. The ship itself has been designated with the hull number B-108, and this designation was placed on the first steel plate whose ceremonial cutting yesterday officially marked the beginning of construction.

The cutting template for the first steel plate was signed by the head of the Naval Technology Directorate, Commander Piotr Skóra, the president of the Polish Register of Shipping, Grzegorz Petke, and the Ratownik program manager, Mariusz Małecki

One could say that the start of construction of the Ratownik confirms the old saying “third time’s the charm.” The program to build new rescue ships, intended to replace the long-serving Project 570M rescue vessels ORP Piast and ORP Lech (in service since 1974), was launched in 2015. The analytical and conceptual phase was completed on 20 July 2017, the tender procedure was announced on 7 September, and on 27 December a contract was signed for the construction of one ship (with an option for a second).

The first steel plate, weighing 2,400 kg, will be used in the construction of section No. 511

It was to be carried out by a consortium consisting of Polish Armaments Group (PGZ), Stocznia Remontowa Nauta S.A., PGZ Stocznia Wojenna Sp. z o.o., and the Research and Development Center of Marine Technology (OBRUM, Ośrodek Badawczo-Rozwojowy Centrum Techniki Morskiej S.A.). The contract value at that time was 755 million PLN, and the delivery date was set for the end of November 2022. However, on 24 April 2020, the Ministry of National Defence terminated the contract due to the fact that, as stated by the former Armament Inspectorate, it was not possible, for formal and legal reasons, to accept the contractor’s proposed amendment regarding changes to the schedule and contract value.

A month later, on 22 May 2020, the Ministry of National Defence approved new documents concerning the procurement of the rescue ship, and at the end of July 2020 negotiations with the Polish Armaments Group were launched. The proceedings took more than a year and a half, and ultimately were cancelled on 21 February 2022.

In this symbolic way, construction of the B-108 vessel under the Ratownik program has begun.

It was only the new coalition government, appointed on 13 December 2023, that revisited the issue, aiming to sign a contract for the construction of a rescue vessel a year later. As Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz emphasized at the time, this decision is closely linked to the purchase of new submarines, a program he pledged to finally complete after many years of stagnation under previous governments. Yesterday’s decision to choose Sweden as the partner that will supply these vessels to our Navy seems to confirm those declarations. It also resulted in the absence in Gdynia of some participants of the ceremony, such as the Navy Inspector, Vice Admiral Jarosław Ziemiański, and the Commander of the 3rd Ship Flotilla, Rear Admiral Andrzej Ogrodnik, who went to Warsaw for the Cabinet meeting (Orka Program: Poland has chosen Swedish submarines).

The Project 108 rescue vessel will be a large unit with a displacement of around 6,500 tons, a length of approx. 96 meters, and a beam of 18.8 meters. The vessel is expected to have a speed of about 18 knots and a range of roughly 6,000 nautical miles. The crew will consist of around 100 people, with an additional nine berths provided.

An empty warehouse hall, which will later store armament and equipment components for the Project 106 Miecznik frigates under controlled temperature and humidity conditions.

In addition to cutting the first steel plate for the Ratownik, a new warehouse hall intended for storing armament and equipment components for the Project 106 Miecznik frigates was opened yesterday at PGZ Stocznia Wojenna.

These are not the last ceremonies to be held at the Gdynia shipyard this year. Another event is scheduled for 18 December, the keel laying of vessel B106/2, the second Project 106 frigate, which is to be named Burza.
