MSPO 2024: PGZ, WZŁ-1, and ICEYE Polska demonstrate the Mobile Satellite Reconnaissance Platform ISR

Military Communication Works No. 1 (WZŁ-1), ICEYE Polska, and the Polish Armaments Group (PGZ) jointly demonstrated the Mobile Satellite Reconnaissance Platform ISR, designed to operate with satellites equipped with synthetic aperture radars and satellites equipped with optical sensors.

During the 32nd International Defence Industry Exhibition MSPO 2024 at Targi Kielce, scheduled for September 3-6 this year, Military Communication Works No. 1 (WZŁ-1), ICEYE Polska— the Polish branch of the global leader in constant Earth monitoring via radar satellites—and the Polish Armaments Group (PGZ) jointly demonstrated the Mobile Satellite Reconnaissance Platform ISR (MPRS ISR), designed to operate with satellites equipped with synthetic aperture radars (SAR) and satellites equipped with optical sensors.

The Mobile Satellite Reconnaissance Platform ISR is one of the most advanced solutions in the world, enabling armed forces to make quick decisions based on real-time satellite data / Photos: ICEYE Polska.

The solution combines communication and data transmission systems, user security, power supply, and a specially designed antenna system, ensuring fast data transmission and direct distribution to the appropriate recipients at any command level. All components are integrated into a specially equipped container, which will be transported on a Jelcz chassis.

The entire system was jointly developed by engineering teams from ICEYE, WZŁ-1, and PGZ. The MPRS ISR provides the capability to conduct continuous operations utilizing the potential of the ICEYE satellite constellation, allowing near real-time data collection and ongoing analysis. The system is designed to operate at the operational level, supporting commanders in decision-making. With MPRS ISR, users will be able to gain situational awareness on the battlefield more efficiently and quickly than before, significantly enhancing the safety of missions. It is important to highlight the mobility and compatibility of MPRS ISR with all elements of the Field Communication System, ensuring immediate response to the rapidly changing conditions of the modern battlefield, as well as distribution of the ISR reconnaissance system’s outputs.

ICEYE is the owner and operator of the world’s largest constellation of satellites equipped with synthetic aperture radars (SAR) and a trusted partner of government institutions and businesses. ICEYE’s numerous satellites can revisit the same location on Earth several dozen times a day, capturing radar imagery both day and night, regardless of weather conditions. SAR data from the ICEYE constellation can cover vast geographical areas as well as provide high-resolution images for smaller regions.

“We are proud to present, together with our partners from PGZ and WZŁ-1, an innovative and comprehensive solution for handling SAR and optical satellites. This new system, with great export potential, enables the optimal use of ICEYE satellite technology through direct access to Earth observation data and intelligence, delivered in near real-time. This pioneering solution was jointly developed by top-class engineering teams in Poland and Finland. The premiere of MPRS ISR in Kielce is the result of excellent strategic cooperation aimed at leveraging the full potential of the ICEYE constellation for the benefit of our customers in Poland and allied countries,” said Rafał Modrzewski, CEO and co-founder of ICEYE.

Satellite reconnaissance and communication systems play a crucial role in the functioning of the armed forces. Acquiring and processing satellite imagery in real time can provide an advantage on the modern battlefield. These are lessons drawn from, among other things, the ongoing armed conflict in Ukraine. The Polish Armaments Group has been working on this solution for some time now, utilizing both its internal resources within the Capital Group and the potential of external entities. This was the foundation of the cooperation agreement signed between PGZ S.A., WZŁ-1, and ICEYE during the 31st edition of MSPO. The result of this collaboration is the presented Mobile Satellite Reconnaissance Platform ISR— a necessary, modern solution compatible with systems operated by the Polish Armed Forces. It is proof that cooperation, which brings together dispersed expertise, can result in a comprehensive product offering for the Polish Armed Forces, tailored to the challenges posed by the current geopolitical situation, and enabling future expansion with additional modules as new technologies mature in this rapidly developing market,” commented Krzysztof Trofiniak, President of the Management Board of PGZ.

WZŁ-1 S.A., with nearly 70 years of history, supports national security and continuously takes action to meet the challenges we face in the field of satellite communications. The lessons learned from the conflict beyond our eastern border show that satellite communications and radar reconnaissance are key on the battlefield. The company’s long-standing experience enabled us to participate in developing the concept of the Mobile Satellite Reconnaissance Platform ISR. This modern solution, based on a container structure with a dedicated antenna system, ensures fast data transmission from the satellite segment and its distribution for the needs of the Polish Armed Forces. The concept of the Mobile Satellite Reconnaissance Platform ISR primarily addresses solutions that meet the requirements of the modern battlefield in terms of teleinformatics, user security, data transmission, and power supply. It is worth noting that the platform is fully compatible with the communication systems currently used by the Polish army. The mobile solution can be utilized at both the operational and tactical levels,” added Acting President of the Management Board of WZŁ-1, Maciej Mieczysław Więckowski.
