- Hanwha will spotlight its KSS-III submarine and K9 Self-Propelled Howitzer at CANSEC 2025, poised to significantly enhance Canada’s defence capabilities.
- The KSS-III submarine, featuring a 7,000+ nautical mile range and AIP system, is perfectly suited for Canada’s demanding Arctic maritime operations, supported by a proposed local In-Service Support (ISS) center for over 30 years of dedicated maintenance and upgrades.
- The K9 Howitzer, a 155mm/52-calibre system combat-proven with ten nations delivers significant firepower with an effective range of 40km, a maximum rate of fire of 8 rounds per minute, and “shoot-and-scoot” capabilities for enhanced mobility and survivability.
- Hanwha’s commitment underscores local job creation, strategic technology transfer, and the strengthening of Canada’s defence sovereignty through robust partnerships.
May 22, 2025 – Hanwha will participate in CANSEC 2025 in Ottawa, Canada on May 28th and 29th, 2025, showcasing a comprehensive suite of leading-edge defence solutions that are proven, in-production and in-service around the world.
Under the theme of ‘Defending Canada’s future – Above, Below and Beyond’, Hanwha will present advanced systems that can meet Canada’s unique defence and security requirements, bolster its sovereign defence capabilities, and foster a long-term strategic partnership between Canada and South Korea.
As a leading global defence solution provider, Hanwha will feature flagship solutions demonstrating the breadth and depth of its integrated defence capabilities for maritime and land operations.
Hanwha is deeply committed to Canada’s defence, offering our unique proposition of global leading technology, value, and sovereign capacity with local production and support, said Michael Coulter, CEO of Hanwha Global Defence. Our ‘Made with Canada, For Canada’ approach builds a robust, long-term partnership to create jobs, accelerate defence capabilities, and enhance vital Canada-South Korea cooperation, aligning with Canada’s Global vision and Indo-Pacific Strategy.
Hanwha is offering its proven KSS-III Submarine for Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP), highlighting its operational performance and long-term sustainability. Equipped with both lithium-ion batteries and an Air-Independent Propulsion (AIP) system, the KSS-III delivers best-in-class submerged endurance. It is capable of sailing over approximately more than 7,000 nautical miles and remaining submerged for more than three weeks, making it ideally suited for missions across Canada’s vast tri-ocean strategy, including Arctic operations.
If the contract is awarded in 2026, Hanwha has proposed a six-year delivery plan that would enable the delivery of the initial batch by 2032 and the remainder by 2035. This approach is intended to minimize operational gaps and reduce the high maintenance costs associated with the aging Victoria-class fleet. Furthermore, Hanwha Ocean plans to establish a local In-Service Support (ISS) center in Canada, which will provide over 30 years of continuous maintenance, upgrades, and operational support.
The establishment of this local ISS center is expected to create high-skilled jobs and foster regional industrial growth, thereby contributing significantly to the Canadian defense ecosystem by enhancing sovereign sustainment capabilities. Hanwha is committed to partnering with Canadian companies to localize the supply chain and facilitate technology transfer, strengthening the bilateral defense partnership. At this exhibition, a scaled diorama of an ISS facility will also be unveiled, visually representing Hanwha Ocean’s local contribution and long-term vision.
Hanwha’s K9 Self-Propelled Howitzer will be another key highlight, aimed at the Canadian Army’s Indirect Fires Modernization programme. This 155mm/52-calibre system is renowned for its superior firepower, delivering an effective range of 40km, a maximum rate of fire of 8 rounds per minute, and high accuracy. Currently in service with ten nations, including six NATO members, the K9 is a combat-proven platform designed for high mobility and survivability. Its ability to conduct rapid “shoot-and-scoot” operations enhances crew protection and operational effectiveness. Full compatibility with NATO ammunition and operational doctrines, alongside the established “K9 User Club” for reliable through-life MRO(Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) services, further solidifies its value proposition as a leading-edge artillery solution.
Furthermore, Hanwha will present its wheeled K9 Mobile Howitzer, which boasts an impressive operational range of up to 700km and a maximum speed of 100km/h. This system is highly suitable for Canada’s diverse geographical environments, offering enhanced strategic mobility as part of Hanwha’s comprehensive artillery offerings.
Complementing these artillery systems, the K10 Armored Ammunition Resupply Vehicle will also be showcased. This system provides automated, rapid, and safe ammunition handling, crucial for maximizing the K9’s operational tempo and sustained fire missions.
Additionally, the versatile Chunmoo MRLS (Multiple Rocket Launcher System) will be featured. Capable of firing various guided munitions with precision, also offers a surface-to-ship guided missile capability, presenting an optimized portfolio for Canada as it strengthens its maritime defence posture.
Hanwha invites attendees to visit its CANSEC exhibit at Booth No. 911, Hall 3 at EY Centre to explore these advanced solutions and discuss how Hanwha can contribute to strengthening Canada’s defence, security and industrial capabilities.
