Ukrainians Shoot Down Over 600 Russian Drones and Missiles

Russia carried out another air and missile attack on Ukraine lasting more than 12 hours, launching 643 combat assets overnight, mostly drones, against seven regions.

On Sunday, September 28, 2025, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced on social media that since 8:30 p.m. the previous day, Russian forces had launched 643 combat assets, mostly drones, at targets in seven regions.

Photos: State Emergency Service of Ukraine

The Russians launched:

  • 593 Geran/Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicles and drone imitators of various types (including Gerbera) from the directions of Kursk, Bryansk, Millerovo, Oryol, Shatalovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk in Russia; Chauda and Kacha in Crimea;
  • 2 S8000 Banderol cruise missiles from Kursk Oblast;
  • 2 Kh-47M2 Kinzhal hypersonic/aeroballistic missiles from the airspace over Lipetsk Oblast;
  • 38 Kh-101 cruise missiles from the airspace over Saratov Oblast;
  • 8 Kalibr cruise missiles from ships in the Black Sea.

The main targets of the attack were the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, as well as the Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, and Odesa regions.

The attack was repelled by the air force, air defense missile units, electronic warfare (EW) and unmanned systems units, as well as mobile air defense groups of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

According to preliminary data, by 10:30 a.m. 611 aerial targets had been shot down or forced to crash, including 566 drones, 2 S8000 Banderol missiles, 35 Kh-101s, and 8 Kalibrs. Impacts of 5 missiles and 31 drones were recorded in 16 locations, while debris from downed targets fell in 25 locations.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky:

A massive Russian attack on Ukraine lasted more than 12 hours. Brutal strikes — deliberate and targeted terror against ordinary cities — almost 500 strike drones and over 40 missiles, including “Kinzhal” missiles. In the morning, Russian-Iranian ‘Shaheds’ were again in our sky.

The main directions of the enemy attack were Kyiv and the Kyiv region, Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, and Odesa regions. As a result of the shelling, the building of the Cardiology Institute in the capital was damaged. As of now, four people have been reported killed in Kyiv, including a 12-year-old girl. My condolences to all relatives and loved ones. In total, at least 40 people have been reported wounded in Ukraine, including children.

Under fire were a bakery, a tyre factory, private houses and apartment buildings, and civil infrastructure facilities. All necessary services are working on site.

This vile attack took place effectively as the UN General Assembly week was drawing to a close, and that is how Russia is stating its true position. Moscow wants to continue fighting and killing and deserves only the harshest pressure from the world. It is in the Kremlin’s interest to keep this war and terror going while it receives revenue from energy and operates a shadow fleet. We will continue to strike back to deprive Russia of those earning opportunities and to force it to diplomacy. Everyone who wants peace must support President Trump’s efforts and stop any Russian imports. The time for decisive action has long since arrived, and we count on a strong response from the United States, Europe, the G7, and the G20.

State Emergency Service of Ukraine:

Russian forces once again shelled Kyiv. Residential buildings and civilian infrastructure were damaged in the Solomianskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Holosiivskyi, Darnytskyi, and Dniprovskyi districts. At present, four deaths have been confirmed. Information is being updated. Emergency rescue operations are ongoing.

Wojska rosyjskie ponownie ostrzelały Kijów. Uszkodzone zostały budynki mieszkalne i infrastruktura cywilna w rejonach sołomiańskim, swiatoszyńskim, hołosiewskim, darnickim i dnieprowskim. Obecnie wiadomo o śmierci 4 osób. Informacje są weryfikowane. Trwają działania ratunkowe i ratunkowe.

At night, Russian forces carried out a targeted strike on Ochakiv. Recreational infrastructure facilities came under fire — buildings and dry grass caught fire. Fires covering more than 2,000 square meters were promptly extinguished by emergency services.

Kyiv Region: according to updated data, 31 people were injured, including 3 children. Fires and destruction were reported in the Bila Tserkva, Fastiv, Bucha, Obukhiv, and Boryspil districts of the region. Work to eliminate the consequences is ongoing.

At 4:07 a.m., the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command (DO RSZ) issued a statement:

Attention. Due to the activity of the Russian Federation’s long-range aviation conducting strikes on the territory of Ukraine, Polish and allied aircraft have begun operating in our airspace.

In accordance with applicable procedures, the Operational Commander of the Armed Forces activated the forces and assets at his disposal. Air policing fighter pairs were scrambled, and ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems reached the highest state of readiness.

These actions are preventive in nature and are aimed at securing the airspace and protecting citizens, especially in areas adjacent to threatened regions.

The Armed Forces Operational Command is monitoring the current situation, and the subordinate forces and assets remain ready to react immediately.

Another statement was issued at 8:06 a.m.:

The operation of Polish and allied aircraft in our airspace has been concluded due to the cessation of long-range aviation strikes by the Russian Federation on Ukraine.

We thank NATO, NATO Allied Air Command, and the Royal Netherlands Air Force, whose F-35 fighters helped ensure the safety of Polish skies last night.

We also extend our thanks to the Bundeswehr for its commitment and support through Patriot systems, which strengthen the protection of Polish airspace.

The activated ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems have returned to standard operational activity.

We inform that no violation of Polish airspace was observed.

The Polish Armed Forces continuously monitor the situation on the territory of Ukraine and remain in constant readiness to ensure the security of Polish airspace.

In the attack on Kyiv, a consular building of the Polish Embassy was damaged:
