Ukrainians Hit Another Russian Buyan-M Class Small Missile Ship

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported a nighttime drone attack in the Leningrad and Karelia regions, which struck an oil refinery and a Buyan-M class small missile ship.

On Saturday, October 4th, 2025, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced on social media that overnight attacks had been carried out on the territory of the Russian Federation, including a drone strike in the Leningrad and Karelia regions, which hit an oil refinery and a Project 21631 Buyan-M small missile ship.

In the Leningrad region, the Kinef oil refinery (Kirishinefteorgsintez) in the town of Kirishy, located on the Volkhov River, was attacked, resulting in explosions and fires. It is one of the largest refineries in Russia, with an annual processing capacity of 18.4 million tons of crude oil. This is yet another energy infrastructure facility targeted by Ukrainian forces in recent months: according to media reports, as a result of ongoing attacks and other factors, Russia’s refining capacity has fallen by 38%, and the Kremlin is considering emergency oil purchases from China.

Meanwhile, in the area of Lake Onega in Karelia, a Project 21631 Buyan-M small missile ship was struck. The extent of the damage is currently being determined, according to the report. Although the attack location might seem surprising at first glance, since 2002, the Onega Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Yard (Onezhskiy Sudostroitelno-Sudoremontnyy Zavod) has been located in Petrozavodsk on this lake.

The Special Operations Forces Command (SSO) specified that at 4:31 a.m., the RFS Grad (575) was hit while being transferred from the Baltic Fleet to the Caspian Flotilla (via the White Sea–Baltic Canal and the Volga River). The vessel was struck on the starboard side in the engine room area.

Earlier, on August 28th, another ship of the same class had been hit in the Sea of Azov. The Russian Navy (VMF) operates 12 ships of this type, which play an important role in conducting missile attacks against Ukraine.

Project 21631 Buyan-M ships are 74.1 meters long, 11 meters wide, and have a draft of 2.6 meters. Their standard displacement is 850 tons, and full displacement is 949 tons. They are armed with a 100 mm A-190-01 Universal naval gun, two 14.5 mm machine guns, three 7.62 mm machine guns, and a twin 30 mm AK-630M-2 cannon, as well as two quadruple 3M47 Gibka air-defense launchers for Igla-M/Verba missiles. However, their primary weapon system is the eight-cell 3S-14 UKSK universal vertical launcher for Kalibr-NK cruise missiles (or alternatively P-800 Oniks missiles).

In addition to the strikes in northern Russia, Ukrainian forces also conducted operations closer to their borders. In the Kursk region, they targeted a 1L122 Harmony radar station and a transport-loading vehicle of the 9K720 Iskander-M missile system.

At the same time, a strike was carried out against the command post of the 8th Army, which was stationed in the temporarily occupied territory of the Donetsk region. The target was hit, and the consequences are currently being assessed, the statement added.

In response, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that air defense forces had destroyed and intercepted 117 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 27 over the Bryansk region, 16 over the Volgograd region, 15 each over the Kursk region and Crimea, 11 over the Rostov region, 10 over the Voronezh region, eight over the Belgorod region, six over the Leningrad region, four over the Kaluga region, two each over the Novgorod region and the Black Sea, and one over the Smolensk region.

The Russians also launched another drone and missile attack on Ukraine. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, since 6:00 p.m. yesterday, Russia had launched 109 Geran/Shahed-type unmanned aerial vehicles and various drone decoys (including Gerbera), from the directions of Kursk, Bryansk, Millerovo, Oryol, Shatalovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk, as well as three Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles from the Rostov and Voronezh regions.

The attack was repelled by the Air Force, air defense missile units, electronic warfare (EW) units, and unmanned systems units, as well as mobile air defense groups of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

According to preliminary data, by 9:00 a.m., air defense systems had shot down or forced to crash 73 drones. Hits from three ballistic missiles and 36 drones were recorded in 21 locations, along with fallen debris in four locations. The regions targeted included Dnipro, Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, and Kherson.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky:

A brutal Russian drone attack struck the railway station in Shostka, Sumy region. All emergency services are already on site and have begun assisting people. Information about the injured is being verified. So far, it is known that at least 30 people have been wounded. Preliminary reports indicate that both railway employees and passengers of Ukrzaliznytsia were present at the scene of the attack.

The Russians could not have been unaware that they were targeting civilians. This is the terror the world cannot ignore. Russia takes lives every single day. And only strength can stop them. We have heard strong statements from Europe and America – and it is high time for all of them to become reality, together with everyone who refuses to accept murder and terror as something normal. Declarations are not enough. Decisive action is needed.
