SIG Sauer ROMEO 9T – one sight, two reticles

The SIG Sauer ROMEO 9T sight is now available for purchase. It features a unique design—separately adjustable emitters generate two reticles on a single lens. This allows the sight to be adapted for use with two types of ammunition, such as standard and subsonic.

Necessity is the mother of invention

The issue with different types of ammunition

The need for a solution that allows for aiming with different types of ammunition has its roots, among other things, in special forces units that use weapons chambered in 300 Blackout ammunition. This ammunition is primarily used in compact semi-automatic and automatic carbines, which are often employed with sound suppressors. The full potential of these suppressors is realized with subsonic ammunition, whose point of impact can significantly differ from that of standard ammunition. As the nature of operations changes, there is a need for a smooth transition between different types of ammunition. However, this has led to the challenge of adapting optics, which requires constant adjustment.

One Sight, Two Zeroes

The Swedish company Spuhr AB attempted to address this problem by developing a mount for two red dot sights (with each reticle set for a different type of ammunition) and a prototype mount with an additional adjustment option. SIG Sauer took a different approach, leveraging its own catalog of optics and its experience in designing and manufacturing them. In the ROMEO 9T red dot sight, two separate reticle emitters were used, each independently adjustable and capable of operating simultaneously. The result is two reticles displayed at the same time—one in red (primary) and the other in green.

Alternate Usage

In addition to adaptation to different types of ammunition, the manufacturer suggests the following applications for the sight:

  • Firearms that allow for easy changes in the ammunition used (conversion kits),
  • Different points of impact when shooting with and without a suppressor,
  • Reticles corresponding to different distances (equivalent to BDC – Bullet Drop Compensation reticles),
  • Default point of impact (e.g., 100 meters) and CQB (close quarters battle, such as short distances in rooms, e.g., 10 meters).

Characteristics of ROMEO 9T

An additional pair of adjustment knobs

The use of two separate emitters is illustrated in an official video on the SIG Sauer, Inc. channel on YouTube.

As mentioned earlier, the position of both reticles is adjusted separately. Therefore, the housing includes an additional pair of adjustment knobs (vertical/horizontal).

The knobs are appropriately marked for differentiation
On the right, the adjustment knob for the red reticle's horizontal position is visible, while on the left is the CR123A battery compartment
Multipurpose Button

On the top of the housing, just in front of the front lens, there is a multifunction button. This button not only switches between reticles (red, green, both simultaneously) but also activates a night vision-compatible mode. An additional feature is the instant transition to the brightest illumination level, which can be useful, for example, when there is a sudden increase in ambient light (such as exiting a dark building) or when there is a need for a quick switch from NV mode to standard mode.

Illumination

The illumination of both reticles can be adjusted within a 15-level range—12 levels for daytime use and 3 for night vision device compatibility. When powered by a single CR123A battery, the total runtime, according to the manufacturer, is up to 50,000 hours with standard use. Battery consumption is minimized by the MOTAC (Motion Activated Illumination) function, which turns off the sight when there is no activity and then reactivates it upon detecting movement.

Other characteristics
  • Housing made from 7075 aerospace-grade aluminum
  • Shield and mounting elements made from titanium
