The SIG Sauer P320 is a design that popularized the modular approach to creating semi-automatic pistols. The easily replaceable fire control unit (FCU) – the core frame with the serial number – allows for free interchangeability of grip modules and slide assemblies. As a result, based on a single FCU, the end user can create different pistol configurations tailored to various needs.
In 2017, modified P320 pistols – the full-size M17 and the compact M18 – became the new sidearms for all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces under the Modular Handgun System program. Since the standout feature of the P320 family is its high modularity, SIG Sauer, together with the U.S. Army, developed the Modular Handgun eXchange (MHX) accessory kit. The new MHS General Forces Configuration (MHS-GFC) introduces the first changes to be implemented as part of enhancements and modernization of the M17 and M18 pistols. Among the improvements offered by the accessories are increased precision and probability of hit, reduced training time, and faster, easier handling. All of this is expected to translate into even greater performance in various operational conditions.

“SIG SAUER remains committed to equipping U.S. Army personnel with innovative solutions that adapt to evolving needs,” said Steve Rose, SIG SAUER Executive Vice President, Defense Strategies Group. “The MHS-GFC and associated AAL items exemplify our dedication to modular design, empowering soldiers with tools to enhance effectiveness and efficiency on the battlefield.”
According to SIG Sauer, soldiers will have the ability to replace individual parts at the user level. Upgrades such as a new grip module, a wide magazine well, a takedown lever with a gas-pedal-type ledge, the RM17 Pistol Red Dot Sight (PRDS), specialized barrels, and other accessories are available to convert the existing MHS configuration into the MHS-GFC or to customize it with individual components according to the user’s needs.
