The first batches of the new shortened AK-12K assault rifle are being delivered to soldiers of airborne units participating in the war against Ukraine—referred to by the aggressors from the East as a “special military operation,” as is their custom when describing the current conflict.

As noted by the Ministry of Defense, the design of the new weapon was developed based on combat experience and fully meets its stated performance characteristics. It is significantly more comfortable than the standard version and allows for easier handling and operation in trenches, urban and built-up areas, as well as during close-quarters combat. The rifle will also be introduced as standard armament for reconnaissance groups.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the AK-12K assault rifle has currently been delivered to units of the Novorossiysk Guards Mountain Airborne Division of the Airborne Forces. This refers to the 2024 variant, which is now undergoing testing in combat conditions.

Experience with the 2023 AK-12 model showed that compact weapon dimensions are a key consideration for assault units. As a result, the latest shortened AK-12K 2024 model was developed specifically to meet the needs of the Airborne Forces, the report states.
Earlier, the Kalashnikov Concern delivered the first batch of shortened AK-12K assault rifles in Multicam color scheme to the military, specifically for Airborne Forces assault units. Ground Forces soldiers also requested the Multicam finish. Previous batches of the weapon were delivered in the standard black color scheme.
