The concern reported that the AK-308 rifle was initially developed based on the 2018 AK-12 model and the AK-15, to supply export users whose armies use the 7.62×51 mm NATO (.308 Win) cartridge as the primary ammunition for infantry small arms. Potential users mentioned include Brazil, India, and Pakistan. However, after the AK-12 rifle entered production, many significant changes were introduced to its design (AK-12M1 model). Therefore, at the initiative of Kalashnikov’s employees, the AK-308 was also standardized in line with its predecessor’s design solutions, resulting in the modernized AK-308M (Russia Officially Presents AK-15C and AK-15SC Rifles).

According to the Kalashnikov press office, taking into account the individual features of the model, several design changes were introduced during the modernization. In particular, the handguard was lengthened, now providing a comfortable and secure grip during firing. A folding, adjustable stock from the AK-12 was adopted, with a rifle rest mounted on it. The receiver cover features a long Picatinny rail, allowing the use of all modern sighting systems, including optical and night sights. The detachable magazines now feature inspection holes for visually checking the number of cartridges. The design of the diopter-type aperture rear sight, which facilitates precise aiming at medium and long ranges, was also borrowed from the 2023 AK-12 model: a flip-up front sight with openings of different diameters makes aiming easier under varying lighting conditions.
