On Thursday, May 22, 2025, Huta Stalowa Wola (HSW), a member of the Polish Armaments Group (PGZ), announced that it had signed a letter of intent with the American company Allison Transmission regarding powertrain systems for combat vehicles developed by the Stalowa Wola-based firm.
The ceremony took place at HSW’s headquarters in Stalowa Wola. The document was signed by Wojciech Kędziera, President of Huta Stalowa Wola, and Brian Geiselhart, Director of Licensing and International Partnerships at Allison Transmission.
The cooperation aims, among other things, to establish production and service capabilities at HSW for transmissions used in combat vehicles manufactured by the company. The partnership is linked to HSW’s acquisition in 2023 of the Powertrain Components Plant, where for years components such as loader transmissions and axles, torque converters, gearboxes, steering mechanisms, and final drives for bulldozers had been produced.
Transmissions produced by Allison Transmission Inc. are used, among others, in Borsuk infantry fighting vehicles (X300 in prototypes, 3040 MX in serial production), as well as in various other types of equipment operated by the Polish Armed Forces: the 155 mm K9A1 Thunder self-propelled howitzers (SNT Dynamics/Allison Transmission X1100-5A3), M1A1FEP and M1A2SEPv3 Abrams tanks (DDA X-1100-3B), M88A2 HERCULES armored recovery vehicles (XT-1410-5A), and in multi-purpose tactical vehicles such as the Waran 4×4 and the future Heron 6×6 command vehicles (type 4500SP). Allison transmissions are also used in the Light Armored Reconnaissance Transporters (LOTR) Kleszcz, based on the Bóbr-3 platform (model unspecified by the manufacturer), as well as in the prototype Jelcz 442.32 Automatic truck (3000 SP).
On November 22, 2024, the U.S. Army Contracting Command (ACC) at Detroit Arsenal, Michigan, acting on behalf of the U.S. Department of Defense, signed an 80,652,849 contract USD (then 330.943 million PLN) with Allison Transmission Inc. for support services related to the operation of transmissions in military vehicles used by the Polish Armed Forces.
Współpraca ma na celu między innymi ustanowienie w HSW S.A. zdolności produkcyjnych i serwisowych dla skrzyń biegów wykorzystywanych w wozach bojowych produkowanych przez HSW S.A.
