On Friday, 14 November 2025, in Warsaw, Wojskowe Zakłady Lotnicze Nr 1 (Military Aviation Works No. 1 – WZL-1), which is part of the Polish Armaments Group (PGZ), signed a framework agreement with the 2nd Regional Logistics Base (2nd RBLog.), representing the State Treasury, for the verification, servicing, and overhaul of Honeywell AGT1500 turbine engines used in the M1A1FEP and M1A2SEPv3 Abrams tanks of the Polish Armed Forces.
The agreement will be in force from 2028 to 2034. The AGT1500 engine, used in M1 Abrams tanks, was originally designed as a power unit for aircraft.
“Ensuring the operational readiness of equipment used by the Polish Armed Forces not only develops the industrial capabilities of the entire Polish Armaments Group, but is also of key importance to national security,” emphasizes Dr. Eng. Jacek A. Goszczyński, President of the Management Board of WZL-1.
The AGT1500 gas turbine engine, rated at 1500 hp (1103 kW) in the TIGER (Total Integrated Engine Revitalization) standard, is coupled with an improved Allison DDA X-1100-3B automatic transmission in a power-pack configuration.
It is a three-shaft, modular engine composed of five submodules, including a two-stage low-pressure compressor and a four-stage high-pressure compressor. Its dimensions are approx. 1.6 m × 1 m × 0.7 m and its mass is about 1134 kg. It is characterized by a high power-to-weight ratio, compact design, multi-fuel capability (e.g., gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel), fast start-up, immediate power availability, and relatively quiet operation (high-frequency sound, difficult to detect from a distance). The TIGER program improved the units’ reliability.
It is worth recalling that on 6 July 2022 the Polish Armaments Group signed a memorandum of cooperation with the U.S. company Honeywell regarding the establishment of local service capabilities for key components and military infrastructure in the areas of engines, drivetrains, and vehicle electronics for the Polish Armed Forces. As reported at the time, thanks to this cooperation the engines will be serviced domestically, which will significantly shorten the time required for maintenance work and increase the availability of military equipment for the Polish Armed Forces.
To date, the Polish military has also received 201 Abrams tanks of both variants out of the 366 ordered, including 116 M1A1FEP and 85 of the 250 M1A2SEPv3 units.
