On Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Wojskowe Zakłady Motoryzacyjne (WZM) from Poznań, part of the Polish Armaments Group (PGZ), announced that they had signed a strategic partnership agreement with the American company General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS) the previous day.
As stated in a brief press release, this is a milestone in the development of national industrial capabilities to provide logistical support to the Polish Armed Forces in maintaining the operational readiness and combat capability of M1 Abrams tanks. Training for the first WZM employees is set to begin in early June of this year.
Earlier, on April 10 of this year, WZM signed a cooperation agreement with the American company BAE Systems, Inc. (a subsidiary of the UK-based BAE Systems) regarding the transfer of technology for servicing M88A2 HERCULES (Heavy Equipment Recovery Combat Utility Lifting Extraction System) armored recovery vehicles, 37 of which have been ordered.
On February 20, 2023, the Regional Competence Center for the maintenance of M1 Abrams tanks was officially inaugurated at the premises of WZM. The launch of the Center was preceded by the so-called Teaming Agreement signed on June 26, 2022, between PGZ and GDLS. In the long term, the Center’s capabilities will also be available to U.S. military units stationed in Poland and other European countries. The facility is therefore intended to serve not only Poland but also other countries in the region where Abrams tanks are deployed. The first Polish tanks arrived at the Center on December 11, 2023
GDLS is the manufacturer of the Abrams tank family delivered to the Polish Armed Forces: 116 M1A1FEP (Firepower Enhancement Package) units already delivered, and 250 M1A2SEPv3 (System Enhanced Package version 3) units planned, of which 47 have been delivered so far. GDLS also supplies support vehicles, including 25 planned M1110 JAB (Joint Assault Bridge) assault bridges and 25 M1150 ABV (Assault Breacher Vehicle) combat engineer tanks.
