On Friday, September 12, 2025, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Supreme Allied Commander Europe Gen. Alexus G. Grynkewich presented plans to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank in response to Russia’s aggressive actions, following its attack on Ukraine.

“I thank the NATO Secretary General and the Supreme Allied Commander Europe for their decisive actions and decisions in response to Russia’s aggressive policy. The Allied Eastern Sentry is not only a strategic decision—it is an expression of responsibility for the security of the entire eastern flank of the Alliance. It is active deterrence and readiness to defend wherever it may be needed. We know that Ukraine’s heroic defense is tied to the future of Europe. That is why we are strengthening our defense capabilities. In unity lies strength, and in readiness—victory,” said Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz following the NATO chief’s conference.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte underlined that Allied forces had acted swiftly and effectively to defend NATO territory. He pointed out that the latest drone incursions represented the most intense wave of airspace violations observed so far, though not an isolated case. According to Rutte, Russian activities along the eastern flank, including airspace violations in Romania, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, were becoming increasingly frequent. He noted that whether intentional or not, such actions were dangerous and unacceptable. Rutte explained that, during the North Atlantic Council session held at Poland’s request under Article 4, Allies expressed full solidarity with Poland and condemned Russia’s reckless behavior. He announced, together with General Alexus G. Grynkewich, that NATO would launch Operation Eastern Sentry in the coming days to boost security on the eastern flank. The operation will involve contributions from Denmark, France, the United Kingdom, and other Allies, with specific measures to address the threat posed by drones. Rutte emphasized that Eastern Sentry would add flexibility to NATO’s posture and demonstrate readiness to defend whenever required.
For his part, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), General Alexus G. Grynkewich, stressed that strengthening integrated, multi-layered air and missile defense, from both the air and land domains, would be essential in the future. He referred to his recent discussions with the leaders of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, noting that they had focused on NATO’s response to what he called a reckless and dangerous incident in Poland earlier in the week. Grynkewich highlighted that the Allies’ reaction had been decisive and effective, reflecting the professionalism and capabilities of forces working side by side. He added that these efforts would continue and expand under Eastern Sentry.
