On Friday, June 7, 2024, PGZ Stocznia Wojenna, a subsidiary of Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ), announced that it had signed a contract for the delivery of the Eurotorp MU90 torpedo launcher system. The modular system, already integrated with several combat management systems (CMS), has been specifically designed for launching 324mm Eurotorp MU90 Impact lightweight anti-submarine torpedoes.
The Eurotorp MU90 torpedo launcher system is fully tested and ensures very fast and effective sequential torpedo launches. The use of advanced MU90 LWT torpedo system technology guarantees highly effective defense for the Polish Navy’s warships against underwater threats.
The MU90 LWT torpedo is one of the most advanced third-generation lightweight torpedoes. Designed and built using state-of-the-art technology, the MU90 is a fire-and-forget torpedo, developed to meet the operational needs of 21st-century anti-submarine warfare.
The MU90 LWT torpedo systems are currently in service with the navies of France, Italy, Germany, Poland, Australia, and Denmark. Now, the Miecznik frigates will also be able to utilize the capabilities provided by the MU90 LWT system.
Currently, tests are being conducted on the propulsion system components of the future frigate ORP Wicher, which is being built as part of the Miecznik program. These tests include the Renk reduction gearbox, the MTU 20V 8000 M71 diesel engine, and the MTU 12V 4000 M53B diesel generator.
The keel of Wicher, designated as construction number B106/1, was laid on January 31 of this year at PGZ Stocznia Wojenna in Gdynia. The launch is planned for Q3 2026. The period from 2028 to 2030 is scheduled for acceptance trials, qualification tests, and the final handover of the completed vessel.
Thanks to the signing of the fourth annex to the contract on December 15 of last year, related to the design and delivery of three Miecznik multi-role frigates, between Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ) and the Armament Agency, the contractor was able to procure not only the engines but also key defense systems, including the C-Guard close-in ship defense system, the MBDA CAMM Sea Ceptor air defense system, and the Mark 41 Vertical Launch System (Mk 41 VLS) for universal containerized vertical missile launchers.
On May 7 of this year, PGZ Stocznia Wojenna signed a contract with the German company Rohde & Schwarz for the delivery of an external communication system and an Electronic Warfare (EW) system for the frigates. Additionally, an Electronic Warfare Academy will be established at the shipyard.
