On Sunday, July 6, 2025, during a live broadcast from the International Space Station (ISS), our astronaut Dr. Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski, together with Axiom-4 mission commander Peggy Whitson, became the first to eat pierogi from the Kielce-based company LYOFOOD in space. This mission, which marks the second time a Pole has gone to space, began on June 25, and the following day, the four-person crew arrived aboard the ISS (Axiom Mission 4: The Historic Spaceflight of Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski).
In addition to more than 60 experiments from 31 countries, one of the elements of the Axiom-4 mission was the delivery of specially prepared meals from the Kielce-based company LYOFOOD to space, in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA).
As we reported on February 10 of this year, the Polish freeze-dried food manufacturer is introducing a new Astro Menu, which includes traditional Polish dishes and desserts developed for the Bonus Food project as part of the Ignis mission to the ISS (Bonus Food Project: Meals from Kielce-based company LYOFOOD are heading to space).
During the live broadcast, Dr. Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski explained that pierogi are a beloved Polish dish, closely tied to family traditions, and most commonly eaten during Christmas, but not exclusively. He emphasized that while living in countries such as Switzerland, France, the United Kingdom, Norway, and Germany, he would often prepare them himself for his international friends as a way to share Polish culture.
Sent into space were:
Pierogi with cabbage and mushrooms
Sauerkraut seasoned with marjoram, bay leaf, allspice, and pepper. Braised with onions and mushrooms, then wrapped in soft dough. The entire dish is served in a golden vegetable broth with carrot, parsley root, and pieces of porcini mushroom / Photos: LYOFOOD
